Aerial dancing is dance but off the ground and in this class we are learning to dance
on the fabrics.
Aerial silk is an offshoot of a traditional cirques arts,
which started with a trapeze and cirques rope, the corde lisse.
Aerial silks which we are working on today is a fairly young field as a performing art,
which I find really exciting because there is still a lot of things to explore
but on the other side it means a lot of explaining to people what it is exactly that you do.
So, when you are up in the fabric, you are not just holding on with your arms or your
legs. You are actually sort of tie yourself into the fabrics, so that if you wanted to
you could just in some moves just hang.
It can have some difficulties learning, there is a strength element to it that can be a
big hurtle for a lot of people, but I wouldn't say it is super difficult. Definitely fun
and rewarding.
As a modern dancer you are constrain to how far you can jump from the floor but it is
really nice to be able to spin and turn up high. It is cool.
I love how aerial dance combines strength, with stretching and movement up in the air.
So it is really fun to actually just to hang up side down. I love it. This is probably
my favorite part of the week.
