Can you tell me why you should not eat organic food?
Your grocery budget would thank you, if it could talk. Or Dave Ramsey would praise you
for cutting your food budget in half without even having to resort to his classic rice
and beans.
Organic food is not twice as much as regular food.
It depends on what you are getting. Organic is regularly thirty percent more in cost,
and it is sometimes double or triple the conventional price.
Organic is healthier.
Organic has no more nutrients than the conventionally grown produce. Unless you are getting organic
milk that has no added hormones, there’s nothing different except the pest control
and fertilizer used.
Organic is better for the environment.
It isn’t really better for the environment, since their decreased yields mean we’d have
to plow more land to make everything organic.
Organic is locally sourced food. A lot of it comes from California.
A lot of organic produce comes from China, where they can afford to have people hand
picking insects off the produce. And the shipping costs hurt its carbon footprint.
Organic means it is not genetically modified.
Humans have been modifying plants and animals for years. Look at the teosinte from which
corn came, and the Chihuahuas that still think they are little wolves.
I don’t consider that a reason not to buy organics.
Because you have trouble affording organics, you end up eating fewer fruits and vegetables.
I’d eat healthy either way.
By buying organic fruits in the hope of helping the planet, you waste money that could actually
help various environmental causes.
Organic food is more sustainable.
While the low till is better for the soil, you don’t have to buy organic to support
that type of agriculture.
What do you think I should do if I support local and sustainable agriculture?
Hit the farmer’s market or plant your own garden. Otherwise, buy the cheap vegetables
at the store and enjoy a frugal, healthy diet.
