I'm the Credit ESL Coordinator.
>> I'm Kathy Lang [assumed spelling], I'm the Professor
of Chinese and the lead faculty of the Chinese Language Program.
>> We're both from the Languages Division
and the Language's Division is very much involved
in PCC's emphasis on becoming a global community college.
In the ESL program we've got --
we're working on a number of innovative projects
to help promote student success.
I'm going to outline four of them.
The first one is part of the first year experience pathways.
We've got two pathways that we're working on; one,
transitioning students from the noncredit [inaudible] pro PSL
program at the Community Education Center, that one's led
by Susan Briggs and Sheila Rose.
We have another one that's working
on transitioning new international students
to the PCC Campus, I'm working on that together
with Amy Tone [assumed spelling]
and Harry Bloodwig [assumed spelling] of counseling,
under the direction
of [inaudible] Cynthia Holibow [assumed spelling]
and Ted Young.
As part of the first year experienced pathway,
we've also developed a two week summer jam to get students
to campus two weeks earlier and help prepare them
for success at the college.
It's modeled after the successful math jam model.
Besides the first year experienced pathways,
another innovation that we're working
on is we're redesigning the ESL curriculum.
We are working to integrate critical reading,
information literacy and content --
content knowledge to help promote students learning.
That's being done by a group of eight ESL faculty members.
The third area where we've --
we've been promoting innovation is in the ESL Center.
We've got a very dynamic list of projects
that involve counseling programs,
and workshops done together with the Learning Assistance Center,
with the math division, and with the Speech
and Language Pathology Assistant Program.
[Background music] Besides those,
an area where the ESL Program is very involved is working
together with foreign language facility on --
on increasing PCC's global footprint.
We've got projects together with --
or we're working on a project together
with Beijing Number Eight Middle School E Hybrants,
which I think my colleague Kathy will tell you about,
as well as other programs.
I -- I've been working together with Susan Briggs
on the PCC Language Academy, which is a revenue enhancing,
short-term project for potential students and visitors to PCC.
So we have a lot going on and we're really excited to be part
of promoting students success at PCC.
>> I'm going to talk about the Global Learning Pathway.
This proposal is prepared by, me, [inaudible],
in the Foreign Languages, and our division dean, Ted Young.
We know that the PCC has offered
for many years study abroad programs in England, Italy,
Spain, and has just started offering a program
in Beijing, China in spring 2012.
At the same time, PCC has been for many years the destination
of foreign students wanting
to experience the U.S. educational system.
For PCC to become truly globalized,
the Foreign Language faculty proposed
to extend our study abroad programs to become a bridge
for interaction and collaboration
between PCC students and faculty and students recruited
in the target countries who want to become PCC students and learn
about the American experience through the interaction
with our student and faculty people coming to the U.S. Due
to the [inaudible] phase and budget concern on campus,
we can open our campus
to international students using our Study Abroad facilities.
Under this proposal, local students
in the target countries will have access to PCC instruction
and provide needed interaction with our PCC students.
At the same time our faculty will learn in-depth
about the educational system in the target countries.
Eventually, we propose to develop satellite campuses,
and provide courses in the target countries in order
to create a vital and lasting bond between PCC
and foreign educational institutions.
Taking advantage of my contacts in China through academia
and Pasadena sister cities in order organizations,
we propose to spear ahead this project in China.
We will include ESL Curriculum as mentioned
in Dr. Russell Frank's proposal in essence
to the courses offered in the Study Abroad Program.
This will be the pilot for projects in other countries
that are the destination of our Study Abroad Programs.
