This is a relatively peaceful area.
It is a nature reserve.
Beekeepers' stories - Hungary
László Csuja, organic beekeeper
The two - this fine scent the bees give, and the fine taste that the honey gives...
and the parental guidance - all these together lead me to love honeybees,
and I cannot leave them.
They are experiencing that the bee family dies out on a sunflower or a rapeseed field.
When the bee is sucking nectar, it also sucking up posion.
Some studies show that as much as 200% of the poisonous dose can be present.
They mainly suffer damages to their nervous system, they lose their orientation skills,
they find it hard to find the way back to the family.
Their immune system weakens and viruses can attack them.
So comparing honeybees living in a natural environment, and those in agriculture, the difference is spectacular.
There is no magic to it, we just have to keep bees in a natural environment and they heal up.
The beekeepers who visited a lot of agricultural areas with their bees last year are in big trouble now.
In agricultural areas you cannot avoid spraying.
Studies on agrochemicals only examine whether a dose is effectively lethal in 48 hours.
Bees do not necessarily die of the poison in 48 hours.
Their lifespan, however, might be significantly reduced.
Instead of living for 50-60 days, they might die after 30 days.
We need to change. We should use agrotechnical methods - like a simple crop rotation - against diseases,
Or we could choose biological ways of prevention.
We need a shared intention. Without political intention we cannot make a change.
I can say that the opinion of beekeepers is different from the opinion of the ministry.
The clear public opinion of beekepers in the country is that even a small dose of agrochemicals is poisonous for bees.
The pollination of 90% of plants living in the wild depends on insects.
The natural state was upset a long-long time ago.
When I was a kid, they never used chemicals on the farmlands of my father and mother.
The reason why 80% of pollinating insects are bees at the moment is that humans killed the other ones.
If there weren't bees today, there would be plants that couldn't be farmed in agriculture, because there wouldn't be insects to pollinate them.
It's a total tragedy and society does not face this.
It is actually us, beekeepers who maintain these branches of agriculture. And people just don't know this.
Let us save bees. Now.
