As we look into the New Year there are some emerging trends for small and medium sized
enterprises. Here are my top three: Firstly, everything that can be digitised
is being digitised. Look what’s happened to movies, newspapers, books and videos – and
even retail. These traditional business models have been
challenged by the digitisation of everything we know. These opportunities and challenges
are also faced by small and medium enterprises. For example, marketing via social media, online
retailing and also the storage of critical business information and data in the cloud.
Next, paper is dead. This is a year when small and medium sized enterprises are spending
more time out in the field with their customers and their staff. Gone are the days of producing
invoices or a carbon copy book or coming back into the office and retyping that invoice
into the computer screen. Today, invoices are produced on-the-spot, out in the field,
on the tablet and smartphone via applications like Canvas.
Lastly, technology is making business interactions more personal. 2014 is a year where small
and medium sized businesses will embrace video conferencing. Why get caught up in that email
rigmarole or travel half way around the country for that meeting - when you can use video
conferencing for that personal touch and to reach decisions faster?
