Hello and welcome back to the fifth element of hip hop, which is beatbox.
Now, most people ask you, "What is beatbox?"
Well, beatboxing is the study of mind, body and health.
As in hip hop, it is a form of self-expression.
It is using something that you don't possess.
Basically when we talk about something you don't possess,
it means like, when the youth in the day couldn't afford to pay for turntables, couldn't afford to pay for records,
couldn't afford to pay for any type of instrument (guitar, a drum set, keyboards),
they said, "Wow, listen to these great musicians playing these great sounds."
"I wonder how can I express myself with the same kind of sound."
So, because they come from a poor background and they couldn't afford to do these things,
what they did was take these little sounds they heard played on the radio, played in the clubs and street places they played it from
and they took the sound and using their own body to create their own instrument.
Now, most people wonder, "Really? How can you do such a thing? How could you make sounds with your body?"
It's very simple.
As it's shown in this diagram, usually when you're doing beatbox, the sound is coming around through the mouth area.
It comes from deep down inside the vocal cords, which also utilizes the expansion of the diaphragm and the lungs.
So, when you open up the lungs, pull the sound from the diaphragm, the sound projects up through the throat,
through the voice box and projects outward to make a sound: boom, BOOM!
The way you push it more out, the more the sound elevates out.
But, the usage of a mike together with the sound you burst from out of your diaphragm, makes a distinct sound of bass.
Boom.
Also, they also incorporated the nostril (hfff, boom) to make a sound.
Now, taking these little different elements of sound, they got creative with it.
So, they made hi-hat sounds, low pitches, low tones, big bass pushes to elevate a sound
that one crew back in the day, called the Fat Boys, perfected.
My man here was one of best beatboxers in the world.
Now, he had the ability to use his whole body to project sound so forcefully out of his diaphragm,
through his throat, out of his mouth to make the most amazing sound that you have ever heard.
Unfortunately for me, I can't do this, but young kids these days practice this hours and hours and hours
of pushing sound in and out their body, which creates this wonderful melody that we call beatboxing.
By using the diaphragm, the voice box, the throat, the nostril, basically the body, to project artistic sounds.
Do you understand? Good.
So now, we're gonna move on to five other forms of Black culture to help you better understand what Black culture is.
Which these forms, in simpler terms, are Black gospel, blues and jazz,
is one segment of the form of Black music we're gonna be talking about.
Another form is hip hop fashion, urban clothing.
Another form: body language.
Another form: soul food.
And last but not least: stand-up comedy.
Okay, so until next time, I'll see you.
