Bom Jesus neigbourhood, Porto Alegre Just 8km from the Rio Grande do Sul state decision center The region that leads the city in a ranking that ashames both Inter and Gremio supporters alike the violent crimes ranking Third in homicides Second in homicides involving children and teenagers First in *** infection cases Yungsters are the rank-and-file of the drugs business Young girls and women sell their bodies to buy crack and *** Here live 80% of the criminal minors of the central part of the city In Vila Pinto 8000 people live in a "social risk" situation Here, among poverty and violence The CEJAK is located It offers a different story to the community My name is Marli Medeiros I am president of the environmental education center Many people ask me "How did it all happened?" "Where this idea came from?" I always say it came from the heart This idea came from the heart CEJAK was created to respond to a demand by the mothers in the recycling center They didn't have a place to leave their kids complementary to school time while they are working After CEJAK was founded here in Vila Pinto having a place to leave my kids after school for my kids to be a part of SASE to me... It has changed my life I didn't have a place to leave my kids when they were not at school Now that we have CEJAK, my kids are here and I work at ease They have computer classes They have hip-hop classes Instead of hanging out on the streets, They are here learning something that will last their whole lives Workshops and Activities... Besides tutoring, we also look for their social, emotional, psychological and affective development They come here in the part of the day they are not at school We do a number of activities here and we are already seeing the results, not only in the interactions among themselves, but also on school teachers reports We have a lot of workshops Theater workshops, movies we have a wonderful projection room, which makes the whole community proud we also have a splendid choir The SASE project supports 50 kids at CEJAK Literature [the word "melado" is in the text] English... Hip-hop... Sex education... Family planning... There is also the PROERD which is a drug abuse prevention project developed by the state police involving children and teenagers and their families thus promoting a huge integration Work and Improvements... The kids were having their meals on the lobby there was very little room but we were able to get kitchen appliances from 'Fome Zero' and then we looked for partners to build a kitchen Thank God we were able to make this dream come true and today we have a proper environment for our kids Library... We used to have a limited and small library but recently, thanks to donations we received more books and brought in a librarian to index and organize this library It got really good. Gorgeous! And the children, besides being happier now have more space to read and research Finally, the reading habits arrived to our community Telecentre... CEJAK also have digital inclusion There is a telecenter that allows, in addition to school tutoring... We have been tutoring kids in portuguease and math And for the little ones, we use educational games preparing them for their future this gives them advantage dealing with computers and it is good for learning, both here and at school Our comunity also have access to check e-mails and send resumees Our telecentre has helped many get jobs Professionals... These days - to address CEJAK demands - we constantly need professionals to enhance the quality of the work provided Accomplishments... There are many youngsters in our comunity that wouldn't have many opportunities After they have been in CEJAK, many doors opened and it changed their destinies I remember the case of Duda who took advantage of the "Young Apprentice" program to get a job at a hotel When I started this project in the environmental center it was the milestone that marked the start of my career There they had teach me, helped shape my character I don't know what would have been of my life if I hadn't been part of a grandious project like the environmental education center Where I live, the only open doors are the crime, drugs, violence... Today, I have accomplished something I have my job, I have build a home I own a car and a motorbike, thank God My wife is pregnant I have plans for the future... a future for my child. I can only thank them Child Education School... There's our child education school Servicing 120 children and it is the sparkle in the eyes of our community [Marli has a dream] I have a dream out of the many that people helped to make true I still dream with an athletic center I believe in the future of education trough sport of course, to make it true I need the support of the friends of CEJAK Can you imagine the joy and pride of the kids?
