Hello and welcome to ComicDrake where I talk about comic books and my name is Drake. Robert
freaking Kirkman. Most of you guys might know him as the creator of The Walking Dead, but
if you like his writing style and love superheroes, then you owe it to yourself to read Invincible.
Invincible is a series that is built on plot twists and unexpected revelations so please
be warned, there will be some really minor early book spoilers. Trust me though, the series
is totally worth checking out!
You could look at Invincible as “What if Superman had a son?” Mark Grayson is the
son of Omni-Man, the world’s greatest superhero. His father is a Viltrumite, a highly advanced
alien race that achieved world peace and decided to spread it throughout the universe. Omni-Man
has it all, super strength, super speed, flight, a healing factor, and an lifespan of THOUSANDS
of years. For all his life, Mark has been waiting and waiting… and waiting for his
superpowers to finally kick in and… they don’t. BUT! One day while taking out the
trash at his horrible fast food job, they hit and Mark becomes the world’s latest
and greatest hero, Invincible!
Life’s good for a while. Mark stops some crimes, fights some super villains, and even
joins the Teen Team. You know, a team of super teens! You might think that this is all just
a generic superhero comic stuff but THAT's when the book’s premise is flipped upside down.
Guys, right here.... spoilers.
Mark’s dad, Omni-Man, MURDERS the Guardians of the Globe and finally tells his son the
truth. The Viltrumites are NOT the peaceful race he has been telling stories of for years.
In fact, they are a vicious warrior race that is looking to add Earth to their intergalactic
empire. His feelings for his son? Faked. His wife? She was nothing less than a pet to him.
Invincible now has a choice. He can either join his father and take over the world OR
he can fight off his father AND the Viltrumite Empire at the SAME TIME!
That’s all I am going to spoil for you today, but TRUST ME, the story gets deeper and deeper
and the art gets better and better. GOD, Invincible is essentially a deconstruction of the entire
superhero genre to almost the point of parody, but it's just SO DARK, it gets dark out of NOWHERE and just
when you think it can’t get any darker, IT SOMEHOW DOES! When you think there's not a
single plot twist or revelation that can't be made, Robert Kirkman makes a plot twist or revelation!
Regardless of how superhero tropes inspire the series, Invincible is good enough to stand on its own as a solo series. So do yourself
a favor and give Invincible a try, it is one of my favorite comics ever!
If you want a place to start, pick up the first volume and then just read from there. It's a self contained series.
Newcomer Friendliness: 5/5 I'm ComicDrake and watch some more of my crap!
