Hi Joseph
Hi Jean Claude
Tell me, what type of brake fluid should I use for my classic car?
There are two main types of brake fluid:
The first, DOT 3/ 4 is for use for leisure-time weekend excursions.
For more of a racing use, Motul proposes RBF 600 and RBF 660, based on technology with a higher boiling point leading to better performances.
Sometimes the brake pedal goes down after two or three laps round a circuit. What causes that?
It's due to the rising temperature. In this case, you should use higher performance brake fluids of the RBF 600 or RBF 660 type.
How often should I purge my brake fluid?
For conventional road use, we advise purging classic cars approximately once a year.
For competition use, we recommend purging after each race or each weekend of racing, as brake fluid is hydrophobic. It therefore absorbs water and loses braking capacity.
Last, another technology is DOT 5 technology in silicone-based brake fluids. They're non-corrosive, so vehicles can remain stationary for long periods, in museums for instance.
