ANDREA: So we're Martinez Street Womens Center. Were
actually a community-based organization. Right now what
you're seeing behind me is actually the Girls Zone
Program. The Girls Zone Program is for girls aged 9 to 14 here on
the east and southeast of San Antonio.
CLARNISHA: We exercise, we get to meet different people that
we see our school but we don't talk to. We learn about nutrition
like that goes in our body, fiber and stuff.
ANDREA: This side of town has one of the highest rates of teen
pregnancy. We have a very high rate of diabetes.
Nowadays children eat so many processed foods, and we want
them to be able to know that for them to be healthy their going to have to
learn how to eat a better way. Fresh vegetables, and fresh items, water.
So this is a really big part of our program.
MIA: Growing up on the east side it's good to have a place where
you can know that you're safe, and express yourself if you're having
any problems at home.
MADELEIN: I'm from this neighborhood so growing up this
neighborhood and I know that it's hard. I know what they
face and I can relate to them and I'm very proud to work here.
And to work with these girls and to see them grow and develop into strong
young leaders of the east side.
ANDREA: Well Blue Cross Blue Shield has been a tremendous help for us.
What we are able to do with the help is we're able to hire the people that can
come in. We bring coaches in we bring paid staff in to teach the girls
how to play volleyball, to teach the a girl how to ride bikes, all the nutrition
that we have for the girl is provided because of partners like Blue Cross Blue Shield
because without it, these girls would go without.
