One of the strengths of our Honors College is advising.
We may forget how confusing college can be.
Students come into college,
any university in the country,
students come in and feel lost.
And the absence of good advising and mentoring
is very, very common.
Now, we emphasis good advising and mentoring.
We help students navigate their way,
internally, within our university,
and understand the opportunities available to them,
within our university, but also to
the scholarships,
the fellowships,
the opportunities that exist in
the wider world of academia
and professional societies that exist.
So, we provide this guidance to students,
and that makes all the difference.
I would say, if there's one element
that is a catalyst for students' success,
it is advising and mentoring at an early stage.
And that's what we provide.
And I think that early intervention makes a tremendous difference
because you take
a student who is confused and lost
and lacking for direction
and you provide that,
then they feel very empowered
and they have direction
and in fact, they can seek out opportunities
and become proactive
and seek out opportunities on their own.
In fact, the search for opportunites
becomes a habit with them.
