Today we're visiting my alma mater, Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.
When I went here, the Marianist brothers instilled in me a sense of purpose,
of caring for the downtrodden and trying to seek justice
That's something that I try to do every day.
We're going to have a question and answer session with the students today.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
I've come back because we're going to have a little question and answer.
Feel free to ask me any question that comes to mind.
[Tim] Jared, fire away, man.
What is the biggest case you have ever handled?
Well, you know it's not necessarily in terms of numbers.
I was involved in some recent settlements.
I represented people all across the country on mass pharmaceutical tort cases,
people who took a bad drug.
And, I recently settled one group for about $50 million,
I settled another group out for $42.5 million
But, it has nothing to do with the numbers.
It's the fight.
I had a case one time very recently
where an elderly woman called me and told me
that her husband had just died.
and the insurance company wouldn't pay the life insurance
For no good reason.
So I called them up.
the insurance company, and I said to them, "If you don't pay this woman,
by tomorrow by noon, the full policy -
and it was like $100,000 -
I am going to sue you, I'm going to sue you for punitive damages.
I'm gonna come after you."
Well, thank goodness, they paid it,
and I didn't take a fee, I was happy to make a phone call
But that, I feel, was one of my big victories,
because without me, this woman had no chance.
And it was disgusting
that the insurance company was playing games with her.
She had a right to that policy,
but the insurance company figured
you know, she was a woman who wasn't educated
didn't have any resources,
and they could play this game with her.
So, even though I didn't make a fee out of that,
even though it wasn't a large settlement
I take great pride in that. Every day I have cases like that.
Great question, man. Thank you.
