Good Afternoon Board of Directors, Thank You for your time this afternoon. My name is Wanda
Stevenson-Randolph a teacher at DeRenne Middle School. I would like to propose to you the
idea to adopt Blended Learning at my school for the 2013-2014 school year. At DeRenne
Middle School our Mission is To ignite a passion for learning and teaching at high levels.
Our students are ready to experience a new way to LEARN! And we want to reach every student.
Recognizing the need for Blended Learning: Our students at DeRenne Middle interact with
technology everyday at school and away from school. It makes sense to use this same type
of technology with blended learning to teach our students. There a NEED for Blended Learning
at this school because it can increase the reading level of each student, personalize
learning, motivate each student, and help each student master the content and skills
they need. Why do we need Blended Learning? Our students at DeRenne need more engaging
ways to learn. With blended learning students use tools like Edmodo, Google apps and Web
2.0 to promote learning. We need to help each student master the content and skills they
need to improve learning. What is Blended Learning? Blended learning is a disruptive
innovation in education that can take many forms. Blended Learning is an integration
of instructional media. It includes the traditional classroom or a online learning environment.
It can also include any combination of media that can help support classroom instruction.
For example: Blogs, e-Portfolios, voice thread, Wiki s, & Google Docs. From creating, evaluating,
analyzing, applying, understanding to remembering. Blended Learning is where face to face classroom
time is replaced by computer assisted instruction activities. The Chinese Proverb says I hear
and I forgot. I see and I remember. I do and I understand During the development process
of blended learning some concerns are: Learning new technology to use, expecting students
and teachers to adapt, finding enough resources to use and obtaining support from all stakeholders.
The most effective marketing strategy for Blended Learning is by example. THINK of Blended
Learning as: How Learning is DELIVERED, Teachers as the (sender), Students as the (receiver).
Blended Learning was introduced more than a decade ago. In 1992 the need for Blended
Learning emerged from E-learning which originated with the launch of the World Wide Web by British
inventor, Tim Lee. In 1997 the first research article in internet-based training appeared.
In 2000 s the development of Blended Learning has showed to be very effective. In the future
blended Learning will continue to grow quickly. The Department of Education plans to spend
$30 million dollars over the next three years to bring blended learning to over 400 schools
around the country. Innovators and Early Adopters of Blended Learning are, Teachers-Team Leaders-Technology
Teachers, Administrators, Media Specialists, Parents, Board Members, and Students, Strategies
to Encourage Adoption: Provide staff members support for blended learning to increase performance.
Provide practical and creative ways to utilize blended learning in the classroom. Provide
teachers with the needed support for new ideas, problems or questions. How to help the rate
of adoption? Locate and help the laggards. The laggards would be the teachers that are
close to retirement or teachers who began teaching later in life. Strategies to encourage
the adoption of Blended Learning will be to provide one on one and small group training
for everyone. Attributes to Reach Critical Mass -Relative Advantage -Tools teachers use
daily (Complexity)-Easy to create and use -Early adopters can provide support to guide
later adopters. (Observability) -Show the positive advantages for usage of Blended Learning.
Decentralized is the best approach. Blended Learning should be maintained and managed
by the classroom teacher. Innovators of Blended Learning can be trained to spread the knowledge
faster within the school. Who are the innovators? Teachers who are knowledgeable about technology
and are eager to learn different ways to implement technology in the classroom. Administrators
at the school level can assist in choosing the best change agent. The Role of the Change
Agent is to: Persuade other teachers that Blended Learning would make their job easier.
Provide support for early adopters so they can support late adopters of Blended Learning
with any problems or questions that may arise in the early stages of adoption. Thank You
! Board of Directors Remember focus on the learning outcomes .and the end result will
.. IMPROVE students performance. Thank You for your time this evening. We are ready to
experience The Blended Learning Way! The power to transform teaching and learning. Blended
