Hello it's Diane, this is the final page
of my Alice in Wonderland art journal where Alice meets the Queen of Hearts.
A list of materials is included on my website how-to-be-a-bad-artist.com
and I've included a link in the description area below.
For this page I decided to use John Tenniel's original illustrations
of the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and Alice. I decided to paint the background
in indigo and make it very simple.
Here I'm using a large brush, then I'm
dabbing with a tissue to create white areas.
Then I'm using a sponge
to add texture.
I used white gouache paint to
paint a very simple tree. Then used
indigo paint to paint two more trees on the other side of the page.
To create the White Rabbit I traced the original illustration with a pencil
onto tracing paper.
I turned
the tracing paper over and went over the same line again on the back,
and then flipped the tracing paper
over again and placed it on top of the watercolour paper.
I then went over the line again and this produces a very faint line
on the watercolour paper. I use this line is a guide
to draw the rabbit using a black pen.
Next I used watercolours to complete the rabbit.
I've included a list of the materials and colours that I've used on my website and
I've included a link in the description area below.
I repeated the same technique to
paint the Queen of Hearts and Alice.
Here I'm using white paint to go over the lines that I didn't quite like.
I'm not entirely happy with Alice's hand
but it will have to do.
When all the characters were finished
I cut them out with a craft knife on a cutting mat.
I decided I wanted to have some hearts in the background
and some flowers on the trees
and this is a great way of using up your bits of scrap craft paper.
Once you've punched out your shapes,
use Distress Ink to
create texture around the edges
And here I'm using Indigo ink as well.
These small playing cards are something I made from a previous project.
All they are is card with check-patterned paper on one side
and I've painted them and stamped them with hearts.
And for the flowers,
I glued the shapes together in layers.
Here I'm using a sponge to add some
leaves to the trees in the background and
I'm also gluing down the illustrations,
ready to add to the hearts, playing cards and flowers to the background.
To add the flowers to the trees,
I decided to pierce holes
and attach them to the trees using brads.
And here are the finished trees with the brads in place.
Here I'm using watercolours
to you add final details to the background.
I added the playing cards
with a brad and red embroidery thread.
