So as part of the hippie culture makeup had sort of died out in popularity if you were
following that trend back in the 60's and that continued to some degree into the early
70's. A natural face really dominated the beginning of the decade but it was natural
and then some. You can see on my lips that I am wearing a gloss which is shimmery and
that was really popular but in general the emphasis was on a natural face and looking
really natural and whether you used a powder to achieve that or you used a little bit of
mascara, you can see that I am wearing mascara. The idea was to look still as natural as possible
because the trend that had come after mod of looking really clean and returning back
to your roots really continued into the early 70's. Makeup was also sort of a contrast to
the outlandish clothes which we will talk about later but the makeup did not really
match them it sort of contrasted with them and you want it to look really fresh in the
70's. It was not about looking garish or about looking made up it was about looking incredibly
natural and that was really a carryover from the previous decade because prior to that
makeup had been huge but it was still a revolution sort of in having your face look natural and
in looking the way that you actually looked.
