My name is Wendy I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 18 in my left knee, femur. I
was misdiagnosed maybe 3 or 4 times they said it was tendonitis. It was my fault, it was
the shoes I wore, my lifestyle all of that. When I was finally diagnosed the tumor in
a period of 6 months had grown. Finally I came to Cedar Sinai and began treatment in
summer of 2004, by December my doctor called me in and said the tumor is not getting smaller
and if we don't amputate now I don't think you'll be able to live any longer so that
was really hard. I blew up I just yelled at everybody, I yelled at him let's do more
chemo, let's do more chemo I don't care I'll do it forever but you can't take
my leg. Yeah...they had to amputate above the knee I just laid there crying everybody
had to help me out the chair into bed and I laid there crying I didn't want to do
it anymore. Today I am happy, today I am more educated about what happened to me, my body
and I'm not angry anymore. It took a while, I didn't let anybody see me I was very closed
off from everyone but I learned that it helps to talk about it and to meet other people
who can understand what you went through the more you talk about it the less angry you
wake up every morning. My tip is don't be scared and educate yourself right away it's
a lot to learn, learn it, read up on everything on the internet, talk to other people, talk
to your doctors ask any question there is no stupid question. Just educate yourself
that way you won't be afraid of anything you'll know everything that is going on
with you.
