Hello.
Today I'm going to show you the parts of a Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) citation for
a journal article.
Then you'll be able to create one on your own.
Let's get started!
Here we have an example of a journal article citation.
The parts of this citation include:
The author name
The name of the article
The journal title
The volume and issue number of the journal
The publication date
And the pages in which the article appears.
Let's take a closer look at these parts.
We'll start with the author name:
Last name first, followed by a comma, then spell out the author's first name, and include
a middle initial if you have that information.
End this portion of your citation a period.
Next, include the article title. Make sure to surround the article title with quotation
marks,
and be sure to include a period within the quotation marks after the title.
Note also that most of the words in this title have been capitalized.
In CMS, you can single space your citation, and be sure to do what's called an "hanging
indent" for your second line.
That just means to bring over your second line about four places.
Also, between entries in your reference list, be sure to double space.
The next part of this citation is the journal title, which has been italicized.
Next, include the volume number and the issue number of the journal.
Note that between the volume number and the issue number there is a comma, and that the
issue number is preceded with the abbreviation for the word "number" (No.).
Then, within parenthesis, add the date of publication. This will always include a year,
and sometimes it may include a month or a season.
After the publication date, include a colon.
Finally, add the pages in which the journal article appears, starting with first page
of the journal article and ending with the last page of the journal article.
In between the first and last pages, include a dash, and after the last page, include a
period.
And that's how easy it is to create a basic citation for a journal article that's in print
using CMS format.
