Hello, this is Governor Martin O'Malley, and I wanted to take just a minute to
wish the best of luck to the University of Maryland's Solar Decathalon team.
Now, for those of you who might follow the Terps in basketball or football, you may
surprised to learn we also have had a history at the University of Maryland of teams that
finish in the "final four" when it comes to the Solar Decathalon. In fact, in
2007, we finished #2. So, this year's project is called "Watershed".
And what the innovative, talented solar decathalon team at the University of Maryland
have done, is to design a house with the best, new environmental design features, whether
it's the solar panels, but especially water rentention, storm water rentention,
water use, because it's such a very important issue to all of us who live so close to the
Chesapeake Bay. Over the last several years we've done a pretty good job of bringing
down pollution that floats into the Bay, from agricultural run off, and also
from sewage discharge. But, one of the areas where we've only started to make
some headway is in reducing the damage done by poorly managed storm water. So, I'm
excited about this bid. I encourage you to learn more about it. Watershed is
the project this year by the University of Maryland's solar decathalon team.
I'm expecting another great finish for you guys. You make us very pround.
Thank you for bringing your talent, your creativity, and your innovation, to the
real life, present day challenge of doing a better job of managing storm water
in this Chespeake Bay's built environment.
Thanks a lot.
