... look, you can give people unpleasant news, that we have to get our spending under control,
and they'll thank you for it. They won't punish you for it, right?
I actually think that several republican governors have shown that, Mitch Daniels...years in
Indiana. We're doing that in Tennessee, cutting budgets. We have a surplus, we've
cut taxes, and people understand that you can't be everything to everyone. I think
it's the adult message that people are surprisingly willing to hear.
But, you know, I wonder, it works in states, and you've had great success with it. There's
an argument, governor, that nationally it's a different story, that when you cut too close
home, lets say Medicare, you cut too close to home, not my social security. Right. You
cut too close to home, not the defense contractor in my backyard. I don't know this translates.
What do you say? I actually think that was the beauty of Governor
Romney picking Paul Ryan, because now we're finally having the national adult conversation.
We're not talking about the little stuff anymore, and I personally think that what
Governor Christy said last night. Hey, seniors aren't selfish, they want to hear the truth,
and you know, the folks who aren't telling the truth, the folks who are saying "Medicare
is going to be the same ten years from now as it is today," nobody with any credibility
can say that. Alright now, Chris Christy said, as you said:
"seniors are not selfish." But seniors also are not stupid. They don't want something
to be tampered to the extent that a vulnerable program becomes a dead program. That you can
make it worse. Democrats have been arguing that republicans will make things worse. How
do you counter, and what does Paul Ryan have to do tonight to counter the impression that
he's good with a hatchet, but that's it. Well I think that the Democrats have done
a great job of saying: "If you're truthful about the numbers, then you must not have
a heart." But I would say it's like, you know, having one parent say you can eat ice
cream every meal, and the other parent comes in and says hey that doesn't work. You know,
which parent really loves you the most? And we as Republicans... You have a problem with
ice cream? No, I love, I'm a major consumer of ice cream, but fortunately my parents didn't
let me have it for breakfast or I would have, and so the point is, I think that what Paul
needs to do tonight is say, here's why I care, I mean here's why I took the arrows
in the back for suggesting why we need to make the changes. And I'm doing it because
I care. The easy thing to do is to leave it the way it is.
Governor well spoken. Thank you we appreciate you very much.
