Cvs Stores to Stop Selling Cigarettes

okay CVS stores are no longer going to sell cigarettes this story I first read about it yesterday I thought maybe we'll talk about it on Thursday show I had no idea how it was going to blow up in the absurdity a some other comments being made about this that that would happen CNN Think Progress Crooks and Liars all reporting on this the retailer said that this move to stop selling cigarettes by october first up 20-14 will make them the first chain national pharmacies to take tobacco products totally of love their shelves they say ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS Pharmacy is the right thing to do for us and for our customers and for our company to help people on a path to better health so here's what's going on CBS is trying to set itself up more as a health company a health care provider they have these a clinics available for certain medical services they have some medical staff on-site and if you're a company that wants to grow in the area up pharmacy healthcare lou shots urgent care it that it doesn't really make sense to also be selling cigarettes so this is exclusively a business decision air yeah yeah I guess so I i you know it's there 1i support even know it is a business decision I think it's great and I guess if they really want you come off as a a hell company they should probably stop selling all those candy a potato chips to write well that would be another level I don't know if we can ask them to do that what we do know is that their cigarette business their tobacco business results in two billion in in yearly sales this is 1.5 billion for the actual products and they estimate about another $500 million in product sold to the those who are coming into their stores primarily to buy cigarettes or tobacco products now overall this is not that much ninety four billion dollars is the total revenue from last year in 2013 that was up slightly from 2012 the company also announced it going to launch a smoking cessation program in the spring I think that this is great I think if you're a smoker you may be angry that you can't get your cigarettes CBS but if you're not a smoker you should be glad about this because remember tobacco companies are really struggling throughout smoking rates have decreased from 42 percent of Americans in the nineteen sixties the kind of Mad Men era to only 21 percent americans today this is going to be a significant hit to tobacco companies I understand people will go elsewhere for their cigarettes from but from the point of view of the tobacco companies this is a one-stop place where by providing all CVS stores with cigarettes you're making a lot of money and having to piecemeal those sales across other vendors is going to be even more money particularly in the first few years were you have to reorganize distribution now it didn't take long for Fox News to question whether its even legal for CVS to stop selling tobacco products look at this and fewer people smoking is OK running a short ratio can't legally since you're nowhere to restrict tobacco availability in a private story writer can do whatever they want absolutely they can take they don't have to market anything that they don't wanna market I think they've come up with a marketing plan offered in the short term this Picasa for money but in the long term we're going to get consumers were all talking about a such a good thing will get more people in more health-conscious people in the store cheney will you still shop at CVS and do you think other people will be offended and not shot you know i'd I thought the whole thing on Fox News in from the kinda but rubra pro-business libertarian is right is that for-profit companies get to do whatever they want and now Fox News is wondering can this for-profit company really stop selling cigarettes the idiocy has reached new highs on the DD pro-business side when it comes to this a anti-tobacco move by CVS Yahoo new the Fox News was in love with tobacco companies I guess that I guess just about any giant evil corporation Fox News's is in love with get that in in no matter what the effect is on people's health or well-being apparently although one of the people on that little panel did say hey I'm involved in the kind of medical segment the medical show we do and I think it's good I don't think people should be smoking at all the tiniest sliver of logic and reason in another apoplectic conversation looking to I don't know maintain freedom whether it's for smokers are for people selling cigarettes sir not selling cigarette is very hard to keep track it's certainly not consistent
