My name is Sharla Morgan and I found out that I had thyroid cancer while in a nurse practitioner
class at BYU. It was the third week of class. We were learning head and neck assessments.
She turned her head for one split second, just right where you could see a mass come
up into her neck area. Sabrina walked by at just the right moment to see that something
wasn’t quite right. I asked Sharla to get in to be seen right away. This is where the
right lobe of my thyroid normally would have been but this is all… It was very difficult
when she came to my office to tell me that it was not benign, that it was indeed cancerous.
We went ahead and scheduled my surgery for three days after that. It was on Thursday
the next week. She went through so much, and she did it with courage and with grace and
dignity and like I said, she truly is an amazing young woman. Now because of having thyroid
cancer, I’m planning on working at the Thyroid Institute of Utah. Who better to take care
of patients who are going through things that she can truly be empathetic with and deliver
the best care? I think that there is a divine hand in a lot of what goes through our daily
life and in that particular moment in that lab was meant to be. It was two and a half
years ago that I was officially diagnosed. I went through a scan and it came back clean.
Everything looks good.
