Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio isn’t going to let President Obama off easily when it comes to the subject of his birth certificate. Arpaio, who lost his re-election bid in November, released a statement Wednesday saying he and a chief investigator will be “presenting their newest revelations to the years long investigation of the birth certificate presented by the White House in 2011 of President Obama.” Obama released his long-form birth certificate in 2011 after growing frustrated about a rumor which claimed he was not born in the United States. “I know that there’s going to be a segment of people for which, no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest, but I’m speaking to the vast majority of the American people,” Obama said then. “We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do. I’ve got better stuff to do.” However, Arpaio was never convinced of the document’s legitimacy. In 2012, the Arizona sheriff claimed the birth certificate might have been a computer-generated forgery. “A continuing investigation is needed to identify the identity of the person or persons involved in creating the alleged birth certificate forgery and to determine who, if anyone, in the White House or the state of Hawaii may have authorized the forgery,” Arpaio said then. President-elect Donald Trump, who is a close friend to Arpiao, was a prominent supporter of the “birther theory.” But the then-Republican nominee declared in September he was dropping the issue of Obama’s birthplace. “Hillary Clinton in her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it,” Trump had said. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.” A leaked memo suggests Trump might have been correct about the origins of the controversy. While running against Obama in the 2007 primaries, a top Clinton aide noted his “lack of American roots.” Arpaio, however, was not dismayed by Trump’s decision to move on. A week after Trump declared he “finished” the controversy, the sheriff told the Surprise Tea Party Patriot group that he was not going to give up on the investigation. “I’m not going to give up, and we’re looking into it,” Arpaio said according to the Arizona Republic. “I don’t know how it’s going to turn out.” “I don’t care where he’s from,” Arpaio said. “We are looking at a forged document.
