>>> HI, AND WELCOME TO COMMON
GROUND.
I'M YOUR HOST.
COMMON GROUND CAPTURES THE
CREATIVE PROCESS OF VARIOUS
ARTISTS LIVING IN OUR REGION.
WE'RE DELVING INTO THE VEILED
HISTORY OF OUR AREA, PLUS WE
TAKE YOU INSIDE THE CULTURAL
EVENTS THAT PUT THE NORTH IN
NORTH COUNTRY.
ON THIS WEEK'S EPISODE OF COMMON
GROUND DR. JIM GHOSTLEY
REMINISCES ABOUT HIS MOTHER, A
PIONEERING FEMALE DOCTOR AT THE
LAKE JULIA SANITORIUM.
PLUS, THE DYED-IN-THE-WOOL
SPINNERS OF AITKIN SHOW US THE
CAPTIONING PROVIDED BY
CAPTION ASSOCIATES, LLC
>> BASICALLY THERE WERE FOUR OF
US THAT STARTED THE GROUP.
WE ALL PRETTY MUCH FOUND
SPINNING IN DIFFERENT WAYS, AND
WE ARE SELF-TAUGHT.
I SHOWED UP, I'M AUDREY METAY,
AND THIS IS HELEN ANDERSON, AND
MIDGE JOHNSON, AND DIANE.
WE WERE THE ORIGINAL GROUP FOR
THE DYED IN THE WOOL SPINNERS.
OUR MEETINGS, WE'D GET TOGETHER
AND KIND OF COMPARE OUR SPINNING
PROJECTS, AND CHAT ABOUT THIS OR
THAT OR HOW OUR ANIMALS ARE
DOING OR BASICALLY THE ORIGINAL
MEMBERS, WE WERE VERY INTERESTED
IN STARTING FROM OUR ANIMALS,
AND WE ENJOYED SEEING IT FROM
THE LAMBS TO THE FINISHED
PRODUCT.
>> I'M USING A GREAT WHEEL TO
SPIN SOME WOOL.
THIS PARTICULAR WHEEL IS
PROBABLY ABOUT 150, 160 YEARS
OLD.
IT IS WHAT THEY CALL A SPINDLE
WHEEL BECAUSE IT HAS A SPINDLE
INSTEAD OF A BOBBIN.
IT'S SIMPLY TO PUT TWIST INTO A
FIBER AND THAT'S WHAT ANY
SPINNING WHEEL DOES.
IT'S ALSO CALLED A ROCKING WHEEL
OR GREAT WHEEL AND THE REASON
WHY IT'S CALLED A ROCKING WHEEL,
YOU HAVE TO ROCK BACK AND FORTH.
AS YOU SPIN.
AND IF YOU WERE TO SPIN ALL DAY
AND KEEP MOVING, YOU COULD ROCK
UP TO MAYBE 16 MILES A DAY.
YOU CAN SPIN WOOL WHICH IS
SHEARED OFF OF SHEEP, EVERY YEAR
A SHEEP HAS TO HAVE A HAIRCUT,
IT DOESN'T SHED LIKE A DOG OR
CAT.
YOU COULD USE SILK, YOU COULD
USE COTTON, DOG HAIR, GOAT HAIR
WHICH IS CALLED MOHAIR OR HAIR
OFF A SPECIAL RABBIT CALLED
ANGORA WHICH IS REALLY SOFT.
FLAX WHICH YOU GROW, THAT CAN BE
USED FOR SPINNING AND THREAD.
YOU CAN USE ANY FIBER YOU CAN
GET TO STICK TOGETHER AND PUT A
TWIST INTO IT AND MAKE IT STAY
TOGETHER.
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SPINNING FOR A
LONG TIME, SOME OF THE FIRST
PICTURES OF USING A WHEEL WERE
FOUND IN THE TOMBS OF EGYPT.
THE TYPE OF WHEEL AUDREY IS
USING IS CALLED A CASTLE WHEEL
OR UPRIGHT WHEEL.
THAT'S BECAUSE IT HAS ALL THE
WORKING THINGS ON TOP.
MOST PEOPLE ARE USED TO SEEING
THEY HAVE THE SMALL WHEEL HERE
AND THEN THE BOBBIN ARE OFF TO
THE SIDE, THOSE ARE CALLED
TRADITIONAL WHEEL.
THERE ARE VARIATIONS OF THAT AND
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL
THE WHEELS IS SOMEBODY HAD A
DIFFERENT IDEA HOW TO DO THE
SAME THING.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT TOOLS TO GET
THE WOOL READY FOR THIS.
AS I SAID, THIS IS HOW THE WOOL
LOOKS LIKE WHEN I GET IT RIGHT
OFF THE SHEEP, TAKE IT AND FLUFF
IT UP, NOT ONLY DOES IT FLUFF IT
UP, MAKES IT EASY TO WORK WITH
BUT THEN I CAN TAKE OUT THE
LITTLE BITS OF HAY, DIRT AND
SAND WILL FALL OUT WHILE I'M
WORKING WITH IT.
THESE ARE CARDS AND YOU PUT IT
ON HERE.
WHAT THIS DOES IS THIS FLUFFS IT
UP SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE WHAT IS
CALLED A WOOLEN YARN, IT'S A
FLUFFY YARN THAT DOESN'T WEAR AS
WELL, IT'S REALLY WARM.
IF I WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING
THAT IS REALLY STRONG LIKE FOR
SOCKS, THEN I MIGHT USE
SOMETHING CALLED A COMB, THESE
ARE COMBS, AGAIN, I'M GOING TO
TAKE THE WOOL OFF THE SHEEP AND
YOU LOAD THAT IN THERE, AND WHAT
THAT DOES IS NOW THEY WILL ALL
BE READY IN THE SAME WAY.
THEY AREN'T QUITE AS WARM BUT
THEY WILL WEAR BETTER AND IT
MAKES A TIGHTER WEAVE.
I WILL PULL IT OFF AND IT WILL
LEAVE ALL THE JUNK IN THE SHORT
PIECES, THE DIRT WILL STAY IN
THE COMB AND I CAN SPIN THAT.
EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT REASON
TO DO IT.
I ORIGINALLY WENT TO A SPINNING
MEETING BECAUSE IT WANTED TO
LEARN MORE ABOUT WOOL TO RAISE
BETTER SHEEP.
THEN I FOUND A WHEEL AND AWAY
YOU GO.
IT'S VERY RELAXING.
YOU CANNOT BE UP TIGHT AND
STAND.
SOME PEOPLE STOOD BECAUSE THEY
LOVED TO USE DIFFERENT KIND OF
YARN, YOU CREATE A YARN AND YOU
GET TO CONTROL THE WHOLE PROCESS
WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, WHAT IT
IS MADE OUT OF, HOW THICK IT IS,
WHAT COLORS IT IS, YOU GET TO
CONTROL EVERYTHING, SO IT IS A
LOT OF FUN.
>> IT RELAXING.
WHEN I WAS GOING TO WORK, I MEAN
I WAS JUST -- I WAS INTO GRAPHIC
ARTS AND A LOT OF DEADLINES AND
THE STRESS, YOU KNOW, IT JUST
GOT TO ME AND I WOULD COME HOME
AND START SPINNING AND I JUST
FELT BETTER.
AND THE EXCITEMENT OF STARTING A
PROJECT AND ACTUALLY FINISHING
IT, YOU KNOW, TO KNOW THAT IT
STARTED WITH MY SHEEP AND IT
ENDED WITH SOMETHING THAT I
COULD USE AND IT IS A GOOD
>>> HI, I'M JIM GHOSTLEY AND I'M
HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE
LAKE JULIA SANITORIUM NEAR LAKE
BEMIDJI.
THE SANITORIUM WAS USED FOR MANY
YEARS TO TREAT TB PATIENTS.
THE MAIN REASON I'M HERE IS
BECAUSE MY CONNECTION TO THE
SANITORIUM WAS THE FACT MY
MOTHER WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE
SANITORIUM, SHE WAS
SUPERINTENDENT FOR 30 YEARS FROM
1929 UNTIL 1953, AND WAS IN
CHARGE OF NOT ONLY TREATMENT OF
THE PATIENTS, THEIR CARE OF ALL
THE PROPERTIES, THE DAIRY, THE
FARMING CONNECTED WITH THAT AND
ALSO THE DAILY DIET FOR THE
PATIENTS IN CHARGE OF THE
NURSING STAFF AND ALL EMPLOYEES,
IT'S A BIG JOB.
MY MOTHER'S NAME WAS DR. MARY
GHOSTLEY AND SHE CAME HERE FROM
INTERNATIONAL FALLS TO OPERATE
THE SANITORIUM BECAUSE THERE
WERE NO PHYSICIANS AT THAT TIME
THAT WOULD TAKE THAT JOB, IT
PAID $100 A MONTH AND WASN'T
CONSIDERED ADEQUATE FOR MOST
PHYSICIAN'S MONTHLY INCOME, SHE
TOOK IT BECAUSE SHE FELT THE JOB
HAD TO BE DONE.
HER MEDICAL TRAINING WAS AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND SHE
GRADUATED IN 1909.
AND SHE WAS AN EARLY PHYSICIAN
IN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA FOR A
FEMALE BUT NOT THE FIRST FEMALE
BY ANY MEANS.
THE MALES IN THE PROFESSION DID
NOT LIKE FEMALES BEING IN THE
PROFESSION WITH THEM, SO SHE HAD
SOME DIFFICULTIES, BUT IN
INTERNATIONAL FALLS WHERE SHE
HAD MOVED TO LAKE JULIA FROM,
SHE HAD A SCHOOLMATE THAT WAS
MARRIED TO A PHYSICIAN, BOTH OF
THEM BEING PHYSICIANS, AND SHE
WOULD MEET WITH DR. ELIZABETH
MONAHAN AND THE TWO OF THEM
WOULD HELP EACH OTHER, THERE
WERE NO SUPPORT GROUPS IN THOSE
DAYS.
SUB ERTUBE ERTB WAS A HARD THIN,
THERE WAS A TEST, MANTLE TEST TO
DETERMINE IF THEY HAD IT IN
THEIR SYSTEMS AND IT WAS GIVEN
WITH A LITTLE INJECTION UNDER
THE FIRST SECTION OF SKIN UNDER
THE ARM AND PEOPLE WOULD GET A
RED RING UND AROUND THAT
INJECTION IN THREE DAYS AND THE
DOCTOR THAT GAVE THE SHOT WOULD
COME BACK AND READ ANYTIME THREE
DAYS.
SO THE MAIN FORCE OF THAT WAS
APPLIED TO THE SCHOOLS IN THE
COUNTY AND MY MOTHER USED TO
TRAVEL AROUND TO THE COUNTY
SCHOOLS, ALL THE LITTLE COUNTRY
SCHOOLS AND THERE WERE MANY OF
THEM THAT HAVE BEEN CONSOLIDATED
TODAY SO PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE
THE SMALL COUNTRY SCHOOLS THAT
WERE HERE IN THOSE DAYS.
BUT SHE WENT TO ALL THE SCHOOLS
AND GAVE THE LITTLE KIDS TESTS
AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE TODAY
THAT REMEMBER VERY WELL WHEN SHE
CAME INTO THEIR CLASSROOMS AND
GAVE MANT TESTS BUT THAT IS HOW
IT WAS DISCOVERED.
AND THE MAIN THING ABOUT
TUBERCULOSIS WAS IT AFFECTED THE
LUNG, BUT IT DID ALSO AFFECT
OTHER ORGANS IN THE BODY AND IT
COULD ALSO MORE OR LESS DRY UP
AND ENCAPSULATE AND FORM A SHELL
LIKE A CLAMO CLAM CLAM OR OYSTET
COULD STAY INSIDE THAT CAPSULE
FOR A LIFETIME OR REACTIVATE
LATER IN LIFE AND AFFECT A
PERSON.
THE SANITORIUM WAS CONSTRUCTED
PRIMARILY FOR THE PURPOSE OF
TREATING TUBERCULOSIS PATIENTS
AND IT WAS -- I THINK
CONSTRUCTION WAS BEGUN AROUND
1915 AND THEY HAD HUGE WINDOWS
THAT LET IN LOTS OF SUNLIGHT FOR
THE PURPOSE OF TREATING
PATIENTS, THEY FIGURED FRESH AIR
AND SUNLIGHT WAS THE BEST
TREATMENT AT THAT TIME, AND THEY
HAD SCATTERED SANITORIUMS AROUND
THE STATE OF MINNESOTA, AND LAKE
YOU'LL YEAH WJULIA WAS ONE THAT2
PATIENTS AT CAPACITY, THERE WAS
A STAFF OF NURSES, THERE WAS A
LITTLE X-RAY ROOM AND ONE OF THE
NURSES WAS TRAINED AS A X-RAY
TECHNICIAN AND SHE WAS THERE,
FLORA BACH WAS THERE FOR MANY
MANY YEARS, I'M SURE SHE WAS
THERE OVER 30 YEARS AND MADE HER
LIFE TIME CAREER AS NURSE AND
X-RAY TECHNICIAN AT THE
SANITORIUM.
BUT THERE WAS A PERIOD OF TIME
WHERE AN ANTIBIOTIC WAS
DEVELOPED THAT WOULD TAKE CARE
OF THE TUBERCULOSIS AND THEY
ALSO DEVELOPED MEDICATION WHEN
GIVEN TO THE TUBERCULOSIS
PATIENT, IT WOULD CAUSE THE
TUBERCOLSA TO HAVE A THE HUGE
APPETITE AND THEY WOULD GIVE THE
ANTIBIOTIC WHEN THEY WERE HUNGRY
AND MANAGED TO ERADICATE
TUBERCULOSIS FOR MANY YEARS.
BUT WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF
PEOPLE FROM THIRD WORLD
COUNTRIES WHERE SANITATION IS
NOT WELL PRACTICED, IT'S
DEVELOPED NEW BACILLA THAT HAS
BEEN BROUGHT INTO THE COUNTRY TO
TUBERCULOSIS IS BACK AGAIN.
THE DISEASE WAS SO PREVALENT, IT
WAS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, AND
PEOPLE WERE CARELESS, THEY
DIDN'T KNOW SANITATION PRACTICES
WELL AND THERE USED TO BE SIGNS
ON WALLS THAT SAID DO NOT SPIT
ON THE SIDEWALK.
NO SPITTING ALLOWED.
AND PEOPLE WOULD SPREAD THE
DISEASE UNKNOWINGLY AND BEFORE
THEY KNEW THEY HAD IT, YOU KNOW.
SO THEY WERE VERY CAREFUL
EDUCATING THE COUNTRY IN
DIFFERENT WAYS TO WITH HOLE THE
TRANS -- HOLD THE TRANSPORTATION
OF THE BACTERIA.
THE SAN SAN SAN SANITORIUM WAS A
PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO STAY BUT IT
ALLOWED PEOPLE TO BE IDOL.
EXTREME INACTIVITY MADE THE
PATIENT MUCH WORSE, IT WOULD
ACTIVATE THE TUBUCULA BACILLA,
THEY WANTED TO KEEP THEM
ISOLATED FROM THE PUBLIC AND
QUIET.
THIS MAIN LEVEL OF THE
SANITORIUM, AS I RECALL IT WAS
MALE PATIENTS.
AND THE UPPER LEVEL WAS THE
FEMALE PATIENTS.
AND THERE WERE BATHROOMS ON THE
OTHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING, THIS
SIDE FACED THE LAKE, IT WAS A
BEAUTIFUL VIEW AND VERY NICE
LOCATION FOR THE PATIENTS TO BE,
AND THEY COULD ENJOY THE OUTSIDE
VIEW OF BIRDS AND ANIMALS
SOMETIMES AND ACTIVITY ON THE
LAKE.
WELL, NOW, THIS IS A MODEL OF
THE SANITORIUM BUILDING THAT WAS
MADE AT BEMIDJI STATE
UNIVERSITY.
AND IT'S A VERY GOOD MODEL, IT
SHOWS A ROAD GOING AROUND THE
SANITORIUM WHICH WAS THERE FOR
THE EARLY DAYS, BUT IT
DISAPPEARED IN THE EARLY 30s,
FOR INSTANCE WHERE I AM
STANDING, THERE WAS AN OLD FARM,
BARN AND WHAT NOT DOWN ON THE
LAKE SHORE AND IT BURNED DOWN,
SO, THE ROAD THAT WENT A ROUNDED
NO MORE NEED TO BE THERE AND IT
BECAME LAWN.
AND YOU COULD STILL DRIVE ON THE
LAWN AND UP TO THE FRONT STEPS
WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY BUT IT
WASN'T ENCOURAGED BECAUSE IT WAS
RATHER LONG.
THERE WAS A SIDEWALK THAT WENT
AROUND AND THIS IS THE FRONT
SIDE THAT FACED THE LAKE AND IT
WAS A VERY HANDSOME BUILDING,
ALL MASONRY.
IT STILL STANDS, THE BUILDING
HAS THE STUCCO ON THE OUTSIDE.
IT IS DETERIORATING TODAY, BUT
THEY ARE SAYING WITH THE PLASTER
INSIDE, THE WHOLE THING IS
CONCRETE BLOCK AND BRICK
STRUCTURALLY, VERY HEAVY
BUILDING, IT HAD CURVED TILE
LIKE YOU SEE IN MEXICO FOR THE
BUILDING, CLAY TILE ROOF AND
THAT WAS STRIPPED OFF OF IT, BUT
EVERYTHING OUT THERE WAS
MASONRY, AND IT STILL STANDS,
DRAMATIC STRUCTURE FOR THE
POWERFUL BUILDING THAT THEY MADE
IN THOSE DAYS AND I DON'T HAVE
ANY IDEA HOW DEEP THE FOOTINGS
ARE.
THEY PROBABLY GO WAY DOWN IN THE
GROUND TO HOLD THAT STRUCTURE,
BUT THIS IS THE FRONT OF IT, AND
THIS BACK SIDED THE KITCHEN, AND
THE DELIVERY FROM THE DAIRY WAS
MADE TO THE KITCHEN DOOR ON THE
BACK SIDE, AND THERE WAS A LARGE
WALK-IN REFRIGERATOR WHERE THEY
HAD THE MEAT AND ALL THE
SUPPLIES THAT HAD TO BE COOLED
AS EARLY TYPE REFRIGERATION, BUT
YOU COULD WALK RIGHT IN, HAD
GREAT BIG THICK PROBABLY 10 INCH
THICK DOOR, JUST GOING IN AND
OUT OF THE REFRIGERATOR, SO
PEOPLE IN THE KITCHEN COULD WALK
IN AND OUT AND GET THINGS.
BUT IT WAS A GOOD OLD BUILDING,
UPSTAIRS ON THIS BACK SIDE THERE
WAS A X-RAY ROOM, THE BACK PORCH
UPSTAIRS WAS FEMALE PATIENTS
TOTALLY AND THIS WAS ALL FEMALE
PATIENTS UPSTAIRS HERE, THE MEN
WERE DOWN BELOW AND THEY WERE
ALL IN THIS FRONT SIDE.
THE BASEMENT ROOMS WERE USED FOR
EMPLOYEE BEDROOMS, FOR THE MALE
EMPLOYEES.
THEY WERE USED ALSO.
AND THERE WAS AN ENGINE ROOM
DOWN UNDERNEATH FOR BOILERS AND
A LAUNDRY, THERE WAS A BIG
LAUNDRY DOWNSTAIRS AND YOU HAD
ALL THE SHEETS AND WORK FOR THE
HOSPITALS.
IT WAS WELL THOUGHT OUT BUILDING
AND THERE WAS MANY OF THEM.
ALL THE BUILDINGS WERE
DUPLICATES TO ONE ANOTHER AROUND
THE STATE.
IT WAS INTERESTING WHAT THE
PATIENTS WERE LIKE WHEN THEY
WERE ASKED TO FIND OUT IF THEY
HAD TUBERCULOSIS AND FOUND OUT
THEY DID AND SENT TO THE
SANITORIUM.
THERE WASN'T MUCH HOPE LEFT THAT
HAD THE CAVED IN FEELING WHEN
YOU HAD TO BE SENT TO A PLATES
LIKE THE SANITORIUM, ISOLATED
FROM YOUR FRIEND AND COMMUNITY.
I HAD A FRIEND THAT WAS A
PATIENT OUT THERE FROM THE TIME
HE WAS PROBABLY A SOPHOMORE IN
HIGH SCHOOL, AND HE WAS A
PATIENT, AS I RECALL, FOR RIGHT
AROUND THE 10-YEAR PERIOD, AND
HE MANAGED TO GET BETTER AND HE
WAS KURD.
HE HAD ONLY ONE LUNG BUT HE WAS
CURED AND HE GOT HIMSELF A
COLLEGE DEGREE, HE WORKED
SUCCESSFULLY IN INTERNATIONAL
FALLS AT THE PAPER MILL AS A
CHEMIST UP THERE, AND DID WELL.
HE PASSED AWAY JUST A YEAR OR SO
AGO AND HE WAS IN HIS 80s AND
HE HAD A GOOD LIFE AND I THINK
HE WAS ALWAYS PROUD THAT HE
SURVIVED THAT DISEASE.
THERE WAS A LOT OF TIMES THAT MY
MOTHER WOULD BE VERY BUSY TRYING
TO TEACH PATIENTS SOMETHING THEY
COULD DO WITH THEIR SPARE TIME.
AND TODAY THERE IS DEFINITELY
A -- PART OF MEDICINE IS
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, AND I'M
SURE MOST PEOPLE KNOW AN
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AND THEY
ARE LOADED WITH IDEAS, MY MOTHER
JUST HAD TO COME UP AND
INCORPORATE THINGS SHE
UNDERSTOOD AND KNEW AND SHE
TAUGHT SOME OF THE PATIENTS HOW
TO KNIT, HOW TO DO AT THAT AT .
THIS IS AN INTERESTING LOOK AT
THE PROPERTY, MY SISTER AND I
DID GROW UP OUT THERE, WE
THOUGHT LIFE WAS PRETTY GOOD.
WE WERE FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE
SAN TOSANITORIUM, OUR PLAYING WT
HEARD AT THE HOSPITAL.
THIS WAS TAKEN IN 1934 BECAUSE
THE OLD GARAGE BUILDING WAS UP
THERE UNTIL THAT TIME AND IT WAS
REMOVED FOR A NEW BUILDING THAT
HOUSED A NUMBER OF VEHICLES AND
OFFICE SPACE AND A RECEPTION
ROOM FOR VISITORS UP ABOVE.
THE OLD SIDEWALKS, I THINK, ARE
STILL OUT THERE.
THIS IS THE PHYSICIAN'S
RESIDENTS, NICE LOG CABIN.
IT WAS HEATED FROM STEAM HEAT
FROM THE BOILER ROOMS IN THE
SANITORIUM BASEMENT.
THIS FORMAL GARDEN, MY MOTHER
WOULD COME FROM THE SANITORIUM
AND SHE WOULD ALWAYS GET CAUGHT
ALONG THE SIDEWALK PICKING WEEDS
TO MAKE THE FLOWERS GROW BETTER,
SHE COULDN'T PASS WEEDS WITHOUT
REMOVING THEM.
THE GREENHOUSE, SHE USED THAT,
SHE DEVELOPED A NUMBER OF LITTLE
PLANTS SHE WOULD GROW AND TAKE
SLIPS OFF OF THEM, START AGAIN,
MAKE DIFFERENT PLANTS AGAIN.
WELL, MY MOTHER WAS VERY BUSY
ALL THE TIME AT THE SANITORIUM.
WHEN I GRADUATED FROM HIGH
SCHOOL I WENT INTO THE NAVY AND
THE NAVY, OF COURSE, TESTED
EVERYBODY AND I WAS PLACED IN
THE NAVY HOSPITAL CORPES AND WE
TOOK CARE OF THE MILITARY
PERSONALLY, ALL PHASES OF ARMY,
MARINES, AIR FORCE, WHATEVER
THAT WERE WOUNDED IN WORLD WAR
II AND I WAS TRAINED THEN AS A
HOSPITAL FOREMAN AND WHEN THE
KOREAN WAR BROKE OUT IT WENT TO
KOREA AND I WAS OVER THERE FOR A
PERIOD OF TIME AND COMING HOME
FROM THERE I WAS PLACED ON A
CONVERTED SHIP THAT WAS MADE
INTO A HOSPITAL SHIP TO BRING
BACK SOLDIERS WHO WERE INJURED,
AND I MANAGED TO GET AN AROUND
THE WORLD CRUISE WITH UNCLE SAM
WHICH WAS VERY GOOD, AND WHEN I
CAME HOME I STARTED COLLEGE AND
WOUND UP TEACHING SCHOOL FOR A
WHILE WITH A DEGREE IN BIOLOGY
AND ART AND ALSO WAS A SWIMMING
COACH BUT I DIDN'T CARE FOR
TEACHING, BUT I PACKED
EVERYTHING UP AND TOOK MY FAMILY
AND WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF
MINNESOTA DENTAL SCHOOL AND
GRADUATED AS A DOCTOR OF DENTAL
SURGERY IN 1963, CAME UP TO
BEMIDJI TO PRACTICE.
THEN WHEN WE WERE SMALL I
REMEMBER BEING IN THE HAUSMAN I
TIMES WHEN THE NIGHTTIME
ENGINEER, THEY WERE 24 HOUR A
DAY ON DUTY ENGINEER FOR THE
BOILER, AND THAT PRODUCED
ELECTRICITY FOR THE SA SANITORI,
EVERYTHING WAS POWERED OUT OF
THE SANITORIUM BASEMENT ENGINE
ROOM.
WHEN I WAS SMALL I CAN REMEMBER
MANY TIMES THE ENGINEER ON NIGHT
DUTY WOULD COME OVER AND POUND
ON THE WALL, ONE OF THE NIGHT
NURSES SAID THEY NEEDED HER
RIGHT AWAY, THAT HAPPENED
FREQUENTLY, SHE WOULD GO OVER
AND TAKE CARE OF WHATEVER IT WAS
AND WE DIDN'T ALWAYS KNOW, ASK
QUESTIONS, BUT WE DIDN'T TALK
ABOUT THINGS EITHER WHEN WE DID
HEAR.
MY SISTER AND I WERE BOTH PRETTY
QUIET ABOUT WHAT WE HAPPENED TO
OVERHEAR AND SHE DIDN'T EVER
HAVE MUCH FREE TIME WHEN SHE WAS
DONE WITH HER DAY'S WORK AT THE
SANITORIUM, SHE WOULD COME OVER
TO THE HOUSE AND SEE BOTH OF US,
MY SISTER AND I FOR A WHILE AND
THEN SHE WOULD GO TO THE OFFICE
AND READ X RAYS INTO THE NIGHT
AND MAKE REPORTS TO PHYSICIANS
ALL AROUND THE STATE THAT SENT
IN X RAYS, GREAT BIG CHEST X
RAYS OF THEIR PATIENTS AND
WANTED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT
THE X RAYS SHOWED AND SHE WOULD
DIAGNOSE FROM THE X RAY AND
WRITE A FULL REPORT AND THIS WAS
BEFORE RADIOLOGISTS WERE BEING
PRODUCED BY THE SCHOOL AND ONE
OF THE EARLY RADIOLOGISTS THAT I
MET ONE TIME TOLD ME THAT HER
REPORTS WERE USED AS A FORMAT
FOR THE REPORTS THAT THEY WERE
TAUGHT TO MAKE IN SCHOOL.
SO, HE KNEW MY NAME WHEN HE MET
ME, HE KNEW MY NAME JUST FROM
THOSE REPORTS HE USED AS A
STUDENT.
SO, SHE WAS PRETTY BUSY ALL THE
TIME.
