if you asked someone : who will win the million dollars?, he will say that it will be him
who live long? he will also answer that it will be him
who's team will win? also his team
why do humans have this instinct to be optimistic?
is it based on certain areas in the brain?
or is it because of how we were raised?
let us discuss this infront of the green screen
in 2007, scientists in NYU found brain areas that are active when a person is optimistic
or work to make people optimistic
as optimism is important so that humans would live a healthy life, also pessimism is one of the main reasons for depression
but still being overly optimistic makes you careless
so it is also dangerous, thus there should always be a balance between both
the process of imagining a bright future is a complicated thing, as you first need to remember past information
and then the brain has to modify and process it
and this modification is what makes you imagine a bright future
but there an obstacle facing scientists, which is, people can't imagine dark futures for themselves
as when the researchers asked them to imagine a dark future they couldn't
so researchers found out that there are two areas in the brain that are very active in making people imagine a bright future
firstly, the amygdala
second is the ACC
the ACC is responsible for many things, such as emotions, decision making and many more
and also the amygdala, which has a role in decision making and emotions two, but also has a huge role in memory processing
also in previous papers, it was reported that the shrinkage of the ACC is associated with depression
are we done yet? nope!
and in a recent paper in 2015, researcher have found that there is another area that is also responsible for optimist, called the OFC
and this area is available behind the eye
and the scientists also found out that people with PTSD have a smalled OFC than usual
also scientists found out that as this area becomes bigger people tend to be more optimistic
and they worry less
this suggests that if people can train their brain to help enlarge this area of the brain, it could help them to be more optimistic
also scientists found that the OFC shrinks with trauma
and they found this in the brains of Tsunami survivors
which shows that this area can shrink or grow
another question, can a person's optimism affect his choices?
yes of course
scientists found out that the way the information is presented can affect a person's decision
so if i told you that this drug has a 40% chance in making you loose weight
so you will be so happy with the drug
but if i told you that this drug has a 60% chance of NOT helping you loose weight,
your decision will change, despite the numbers being the same, but what changes was your decision
and that is because of how the information was given to you, and this is how marketers play their game
and not only that, but scientists have found that decision making is gender based
so for example for life & death related issues
you will find men are more affected by positive presentation or by the number of people who will live
while women are more affected by the negative presentation or by how many people will die
and we find the opposite when it comes to food, as men are more affected by negative proposals
so if i say to a woman, this Ice cream bar is 80% fat free, she will buy the product,
but men will always concentrate with the 20% fat left
and through the years, researchers found that there is a difference between both genders in decision making
and this is natural when it comes to each one's role in the community
