Welcome brothers and sisters to the fourth meeting of the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel.
A secret society dedicated to discovering, decoding, and protecting the secrets of Gravity
Falls. I am this chapters founder and duly appointed High Exhaulted Big Fish, Douglas
Mackrell. Before we start, the minutes of last week's meeting can be found here, via
this link - and now for this week's order of business: Bill Cipher's Wheel.
A lot of theorists have broken down this wheel several times, but I thought I would take
an official meeting to address the topic fully and give my personal theories. As everyone
knows, for a single frame during the theme song this cryptic page from the journals flashes
on screen. Amongst a lot of alchemical symbols and illegible handwriting - there are two
things of note: A code that reads "Stan is not what he seems" and a wheel of symbols
that encircles a picture of Bill Cipher.
As per Bill's own admission, three of these symbols directly relate to characters in the
show. The question mark is Soos, The pine tree is Dipper, and the shooting star is Mabel
- all of whom have worn their symbols at various points in the series. The other symbols have
yet to be directly defined, but some symbols are more directly connected to those who are
seen with them. Like the stitched heart, which Robbie V wears on his hoodie, and the star
Gideon uses atop the Tent of Telepathy.
The disputes start popping up when you delve into more obtuse images on the wheel that
have appeared in the show, but are probably not attached to a specific person. These symbols
are the llama, the ice bag, the glasses, Stan's fez symbol, and the six fingered hand. I have
my theories for each of these, so let me explain what I believe each symbol means, why I think
so, and how I can back up these assumptions.
The first two that I will get out of the way are the easiest to define. The fez symbol
is representative of Stan Pines, and the six fingered hand is representative of the Journals
themselves. These make fairly logical sense because each is shown emblazoned with that
symbol, and their placement on the wheel makes sense. This also important because it opens
the door to wider definitions of the other symbols - since the journals are a thing and
not a specific person.
So with that in mind, I feel like the glasses - which were found in a hidden room inside
of the Mystery Shack represent the Mystery Shack itself. And hold onto your butts, because
to define the last two symbols, I'm going to go pretty far down the rabbit hole. The
ice bag is first seen in the Dusk 2 Dawn convenience store in the episode The Inconveniencing.
It's the material possession of Ma and Pa Duskerton, the now deceased owners. My belief
is that the ice bag on the wheel represents the paranormal elements of Gravity Falls.
Conversely, the llama on the opposite side of the wheel represents nature and the naturally
found elements of Gravity Falls. This comes from the misleading clue from the disembodied
head of Larry King during the credit sequence of Headhunters. Mabel is trying to decide
between sweaters, and Larry tells her that "Llamas are nature's greatest warriors." If
you strip this odd quote of all of it's context, you get that llamas represent nature.
So, with the definitions in place, you start to see some interesting properties to the
wheel itself. Firstly, that opposing sides of the wheel want something from or are at
odds with their polar opposites. Dipper and Robbie are at odds over Wendy. Mabel and Grunkle
Stan are at odds over leadership styles. Gideon wants to get his hands on the Mystery Shack,
but is repeatedly foiled. Nature is constantly at odds with the paranormal. And most interestingly,
Soos is opposite the Journals - which makes me think that he secretly wants or needs something
from them.
Now what really locks in these definitions for me is the clue dropped by Bill Cipher
himself. He names three points on the wheel when he addresses everyone in Stan's mind.
Dipper, Soos, and Mabel. When you join the points, you create a triangle where the point
of the triangle need the other two points. Knowing this, when you turn the triangle you
get some really interesting and logical combinations. Turning it to the right, you get Grunkle Stan
who needs The Journals and the Mystery Shack. Further still, and you get Gideon who needs
the paranormal and Mabel. And probably the most interesting turn is Robbie who needs
the Paranormal and the Journals.
But these are all just theories, until they're properly defined in the next season. So what
are your theories on Bill's wheel? Do you think the same wheel will be in effect for
the next season, or will a new wheel be revealed? Leave your theories and suggestions in the
comments below! And now, before we close today's meeting, one last order of business.
I have been insanely busy, folks. If you've contacted me in the past week, just be patient
as i'll be personally getting back to all 237 of you as soon as I can. I'm still finding
my sweet spot to balance all of my responsibilities and I appreciate your patience as I catch
up on correspondence. That said, I'm now calling an end to mission stated in last week's MEMBERS
ONLY secret message. For the rest of the week, I'll be sharing the work of those who submitted
on the Tumblr pages, and updating the membership roster as I go.
This week's challenge is a little harder. It's the Oath Augmentation Challenge - for
which I created a brand new code based on the alchemical symbols I talked about in the
last meeting, but unlike in the past - there is no direct cipher for the code. I am continually
surprised by just how cunning our members are, so this is a bit of a test of your abilities.
Those who can crack the code and answer the three riddles will be rewarded with a download
of the club motto on a specially designed card.
The codes are going to get tougher from here on out, and that's why our motto is a little
special. If you tell me the motto in a private message - then I will pass you automatically
for any challenge, but at the cost of your rank in the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel.
I'm not without mercy - but mercy has a price.
With no other orders of business, I hereby call a close to this meeting of the Royal
Order of the Holy Mackerel. Until next time, share, subscribe, and keep cracking those
codes.
