Hello and welcome to the second episode of the project B.A.R.K.S. ! I'm really
happy with the appreciation that has received the pilot of the project , which I hope will
grow more and more. But don't linger and let's go over in this new
bubbly episode!
in this episode we go through the two years 45 46
Barks improves visibly , developing more and more the character and
psychology of the Ducks , will also begin to produce even a few ten -pager
that doesn't want only to make people laugh but also to convey messages more or less important.
But we start with one which is a real jewel: Donald Duck and the terror of
the river!!
the plot of this story may appear trivial
but the way in which Barks trafficking and develops the story-plot
that turns it into a real pearl
Donald buys for $ 30
a houseboat in Ohio and decided to go with the nephews for a
holiday
but soon
The Ducks will come across a monstrous sea serpent ! Really amazing
how
Barks, from a plot like this, was able to create a story
which you just can't missed
In the first part of the story
the Good Artist will create situations really hilarious : the ones that follow are
pages and pages of pure fun The reader will not fail
of laugh! Memorable in this sense
the "river lessons" that Donald learns sailing on the river for the first
time
then , however , there is a setback
Enter: the snake.
It isn't a beast to make fun of, as others that Barks will show us
in following years: it's scary.
From here on, there will be a growing voltage
that will not subside even after the discovered that the beast
is only artificial. It's great how the nephews remain stunned due to the absence of streams of blood
after having pierced the monster with some harpoons: it is
something that undoubtedly makes characters and what they do much more
realistic. The climax is therefore reached when Donald Duck is swallowed
by the monster
and is succubus of the frightening death threats of
the mysterious manipulator. I've spoilered so brutally right to analyze the
personality of this particular villain:
he scares others because he likes it.
because he enjoys it.
the perfect nihilist , in short : a bit like Alex of A Clockwork Orange, just to
give you the idea. It is certainly one of the most interesting
character of the barksian cast. Dialogue taken from the story :
"But why? "
"Why scaring? "
"why?"
"why do people dance?"
"Because they like it , because they've fun !"
"I likes to scare people to the death."
a true psychopath, in short : like Criminal Minds'. Really
great, especially for those years and for a Disney comic.
The snake is drawn very fine, as well as
the setting and the characters
always very expressive
as Barks, on the other hand , always does. The particularity of this story is
that when it's published in Italy for the first time , on " Topolino",
is completely changed: some cartoons are replaced by others, are
performed pumping absurd and, above all, the story is set in
Italy !
Yes, in Italy , in Golasecca , which is a small town that really exist in
the province of Varese
near the Ticino
that it is the river on which the Ducks browse. In the adventure Donald
even cites
the Po
the Adda , Como , Pavia
crazy stuff, in this first rambling our local version

For this story, my advice is that you have to read it only if you're a philologist
or a collector "of race", because, in my humil opinion, the only element
noteworthy is that the story represented the only point of contact who will have carl barks
and the most famous mouse in the world. In war period the drawers
scarce and due to this, Barks decides to help
so will draw
this mickey mouse's adventure, on story and screenplay of others
in this story barks only puts pencils
and it is really evident
the whole plot is lackluster
sometimes banal and devoid of mordant
and above all
you feel that the story would have been better
with more pages, a thing that for barks, the undisputed master of
narrative rhytms, it would be really abnormal . It isn't much to say
It is felt
as the Good Artist were not, as it were , inspired by :
the cast of Mouseton isn't drawn very fine.
You can locate some cartoons in which the poses and expressions of the characters
are unnatural , artificial : it is as if the characters themselves did not believe
to what
are doing , as if an actor did not believe to what he is
doing on the scene.
Moreover, it fails to impress the proverbial expressivity,
characteristic of his ducks
also
the character design is rather archaic , with the return of Mickey in shorts .
It is maybe this story too which helps to inspire the Spanish artist
Cesar Ferioli
for the construction of its proverbial and distinctive style . I know that
someone likes this story, also some illustrious names as
Luca Boschi
but honestly it did not succeed to convince me.

This here is just one of the best stories
to talk about distortions of an original work
this time the censorship is not applied in Italy but rather
already in the United States where the editors
decide to change the ending of "donald duck - the firebug"
The reason of this choice ?
before talking about it,
i need to talk about the story, which is definitely
atypical
both in form and in content.
as regards the shape , is unusual due to the handling of the tables
As a matter of fact, each page contains about 10 cartoons
in place of the canonical 7-8
regarding the contents, the story is curious since it deals with a subject
a little ' prickly: psychotic pyromania. Donald , due to a blow
in the head,
develops a morbid passion for the fire and the flames
and become wanted by the police
because of several fires raging in the city. The story seems obvious but
in fact it is not at all:
actually follow many plot twists
which going to turn the narration where necessary , in addition, it's
important , to a difficult topic as that maniacal
obsession.
other times , even before this story, Barks
had presented a Donald Duck who
became very good at doing something or
obsessed by something after a blow on the head. For example ,
before this story, there was " Donald Duck The Mad Chemist", but never as in
this case . The behavior of Donald Duck is, as a matter of fact, typically obsessive -compulsive,
pathological
Barks also emphasizes this with another character in the
story : you've to find out what it is .
Donald also be deemed innocent and there will be only the nephews to help him
for groped to clear him .
here returns a theme dear to Hitchcock in barks' story, the innocent
falsely accused and persecuted by everything and everyone . In the ending
drawn by the Good Artist
Donald Duck , after having set fire to the room of the court,
was -rightly- sent to jail
Editors , however, believe this final too morally harmful and then change
completely the final,
inserting two cartoons that make the whole adventure
a dream of Donald Duck.
these things get totally pissed off
primarily because of the dream
is a horrible and overused cliché
secondly because
in my opinion is the basic idea to be wrong . I am absolutely against the
censorship.
in these cases, in my opinion,
there are 2 things to do:
to publish the story or not to publish the story
there isn't the third possibility " to public the story remodeled and *** " and
in this case
redrawn, even very bad, from another artist.
thirdly
I do not see how
the barks' final can be
moraly harmful for readers
because I do not think there are even the reasons
to censor the story
now you tell me as a final like barks' one could be harmful to the readers'
minds
I do not think that reading this story
then we would have seen children going around with fuel tanks and
matches
also
I do not think which the Barks' final was morally harmful, quite the contrary: donald duck
commits an offense and donald duck is punished, Donald goes to prison
so editors , dear editors, do not combine these ***
because then posterity will suffer. Anyway I've been able to find the
final cartoons of the story as they would have been in the will of barks,
redrawn years later by the Dutch artist Daan Jippes , which has
a really similar stretch to Barks'. The baloon is in Swedish and I
publish it here:
from what I could understand Donald is complaining of the fact that
the judges do not wear fireproof togas or something like that
would have been a nice final, cute and absolutely NOT morally harmful (for
reasons that I have already said before). Instead , due to the genius of the moment we have to see a
story that ends in a way that
is really terrible , which makes a mockery of the reader and that is also drawn poorly in
last two cartoons .
From the graphic point of view
apart from the usual speeches about the transformation that is affecting the
stretch of barks
is proper to make some mention of how barks shows the city of
duckburg:
as a matter of fact for the first time it represents the center
doing so discover us that it is a metropolis and that the Ducks
living in a small house in his periphery
Barks draws skyscrapers, buildings and in general an oppressive atmosphere for that
which I think is the very first contribution to
the creation
of the '96 series
" Paperinik New Adventures ", for friends PKNA , which presents a Duckburg
I think that also draws inspiration
by the duckburg represented by Barks in " Donald Duck The Firebug"
link INDUCKS of the story in the description. Immediately inaugurate the corner
of the ten - pagers of this episode with Donald and the icebox robber
a story really hilarious
thanks also - and perhaps especially - to the Italian adaptation of the dialogues ,
although it is not fanciful, for this are not less valid. In the story, Donald accuse his
nephews to plunder the fridge overnight
but you will soon discover that the culprit is himself
from here you will emerge a series of hilarious comedians ,
one of which have a war background: Donald,
which is sleepwalker , exclaim addressing Huey, Dewey and Louie
"I see you, small Japanese almond-eyed , I run through you with my
bayonet as pieces of roast mutton"
everything of this
is completely replaced in future editions of the story and completely
upset in the Italian editions . To quote is also " Donald Duck *** Order,"
a physical and slapstick comedy
for once is a Barks' comic to inspire a short film
" The Clown of the Jungle " in both situations
Donald is working with the bird-watching : in the ten -pager
will try to photograph a very rare bird
while in the short film will be disturbed from the Aracuan
an exotic bird that ...
I bet all you remember of them. Moving on. Another worthy story is
" Donald Duck Ten-Dollar Dither," a parable about honesty, in which Barks also finds the time to be ironic about censorship of which himself is a victim .
" Donald Tames His Temper" is, allow me to say ,
the first ten -pager which is
a masterpiece
as usual in short stories Barks focuses on the everyday life of
the ducks , on ordinary life
without comparing them with the ex-traordinary
of the long stories. Here Donald Duck, at the urging of Daisy,
choose their proposals for the New Year, which is to not
get angry again. The nephews, still in the phase of mischief , not
be long
to take advantage of it . Will the duck be able to maintain his commitment?
I think this ten -pager is a masterpiece for many reasons : the gags are really
hilarious : a few times I enjoyed like this reading a comic book
the drawings are crisp, well executed, and make the most of what
happens during the story . Once more
plays a dominant role the proverbial expressiveness
of Barks' ducks . Certainly worthy of note the scene where Huey Dewey and Louie
are intent on smashing the kitchen while barks decides to show us the
reactions of Donald Duck against what he's hearing , maintaning
the shot
fixed to Donald
Finally, the final cartoon is brilliant : is ilarious and closes the story
in the best way . standing ovation.
Another remarkable story is "Donald's monster kite"
in which Barks show us another dispute between uncle and nephews but here
he focuses his attention
on the investigation of the psychological side of the ducks that here , to all effects ,
behave like men. The very successful sequence in which the nephews make use of
the " dialectic strategy ", as it is called from them , to avoid the punishment of the
uncle, is amazing. also very nice the cartoon in which the nephews
care in a truly poignant way for the fate of Donald Duck
same story for "Playin' Hookey" in which
all the characters recite in a very realistic way and are perfectly
characterized. " Donald Duck Swimming Swindlers", in addition to being very
funny,
emphasizes the role of
educator, of father figure who Donald must represent for the three nephews.
From the purely hilarious point,
I've to mention "Biceps Blues"and "Donald Duck The Smugsnorkle Squattie" even though both stories want to convey
messages a bit most important in addition to laugh
on the one hand it makes a smart satire
the superficiality of American middle class of those years, while
in the other hand he emphasize that a dog with pedigree
is not necessarily better or however preferable to a half-breed
or a stray
In short , generalizing, does not matter what that you were born , but what you are, what
you've become. We came to the end of the second episode of
Barks project: I hope that you've liked it and in this case
I urge you to let me know with a comment, likes and he is also
