Hi - this is Rachel - and this is Kendra - and you're watching This Week in TV. Today we
have the week's scheduling and then in honor of that little sporting event the Super Bowl,
we'll be talking about Sports-Themed TV Shows. Kendra, what's on?
K: Well Rachel, on Monday all the CBS comedies are reruns, and it's the big 100th episode
of Gossip Girl on The CW at 8pm. On Tuesday, after a 1-week break, Glee returns on FOX
with its Michael Jackson-themed episode followed by the returns of New Girl and Raising Hope.
On The CW, Ringer makes its midseason return at 9pm. On Wednesday, CBS is airing Super
Bowl's Greatest Commercials at 8pm. So, that's the beginning of the week, what's on the rest
of the week, Rachel?
R: On Thursday we have the official launch of MTV's I Just Want My Pants back which they
previewed last Fall. The show returns at 11PM with a special 1 hour launch. On Friday Who
Do You Think You Are? returns to NBC at 8. Finally, perhaps most excitingly for some,
it's the Super Bowl on Sunday September 5th: Giants vs. Patriots - followed by the season
premiere of the Voice on NBC. Check your local listings for the exact times on those.
"Sports" TV
R: Sunday's upcoming Super Bowl has gotten Kendra and myself with sports on our minds,
and about all of the TV shows that are about sports. Supposedly. We then kind of realized
that even the TV shows that are about sports, are not really about sports. Kendra, what
are some examples?
K: My picks, all of which I like but are way more about the drama than the sport, are Make
It or Break It, Hellcats, and The Game.
R: Good picks, Kendra, though I would argue that there IS quite a bit of gymnastics footage
in Make It Or Break It including lots of scenes shot in the gym, and of practices and meets.
K: Yeah I can see that, I suppose that focus of the sport is what makes it unique from
the other ABC Family teen dramas focused on some sort of lying or secrets. So, what sports
shows would YOU say are more about the drama than the sport, Rachel?
R: My picks include Friday Night Lights, The League and Sports Night. Friday Night Lights
- though it centers on Texas football - was always more of a family drama for me. The
League is very Friends/HIMYM-like with some football antics thrown in on the side and
Sports Night was always more about the creation of a sports news show than about sports themselves.
K - Now, I'd have to say from your picks, Rachel that FNL had enough focus on what football
meant to Coach Taylor and all his players that it was more about the sport than your
other picks, but that's just me...what do you think of these sports shows - really about
the sport or not? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to SideReel's YouTube channel,
Facebook, or Twitter for more TV news and buzz.
R: And we'll see you next week.
