I love summer.
I don't know about you, but I'm getting ready to ride on my motorcycle
and getting ready to do some boating.
But you know, when I think about those things, I think about safety.
And safety is job one for us.
You're important to us,
and we want you to come back from those wonderful summer activities.
I don't know if you know it, but the majority of the accidents that happen--
the fatal accidents--in the Army are between April and September.
Why is that?
Well, sometimes our judgment gets impaired.
What I'm here to talk to you about today is how to have fun
but also how to be safe while you're doing it.
I don't know if you know it, but we had 372 million visitor days
to our recreation sites last year.
We had a few fatalities, and every one hurts.
If you're out on a boat, I just want to say you've got to watch that alcohol consumption.
Alcohol and boating do not mix.
Boating and life jackets--they mix well.
And for those of you that, like me, like to ride your two-wheeler,
if you can take your time, if you can look out ahead,
remember people don't see you as well as you see them.
And for you I just have one piece of advice:
Keep the shiny side up.
You all have a great summer out there. Be safe. God bless you all.
