Welcome to another episode of I Know Jax, I’m Joe Talentino. Last week I received
a lot of emails, texts and calls about the fact that we are now premiering I Know Jax
online on Fridays on our website. I’m very excited about it and I think it’s cool.
I had folks that were worried that we weren’t broadcasting anymore well obviously we are
although we will be moving to new times in a couple weeks more details on that later.
All of this in time for the big fall push of new shows.
It still doesn’t feel like fall though, does it? I have a hard time switching over
to fall mode, to me it’s still Summer. But that’s life in Florida, isn’t it. This
weekend I went to Veteran’s Memorial Arena for the Mixed Martial Arts event. I want to
personally congratulate Scott who won the tickets. I hope you enjoyed the event as much
as I did. Just take a look at this. ===
Tonight I’m checking out Jacksonville’s newest sports franchise, House of Fame MMA
New Dawn. Good evening fight fans, welcome to Jacksonville, Florida.
[music] I’m with Anderson Hutchinson at House of
Fame MMA New Dawn event, and you were the first winner. How does it feel, man? I feel
fantastic. Thank God I got that win. Tell me a little bit about the fight. It was tough.
I guess he’s an experienced boxer, that’s what he did before MMA. I definitely felt
that. I had to change my game plan use striking and take downs. It came out on my side so
I’m happy. So Robert, I think you had the fight of the night with a comeback from hell.
Tell me about it. I’ll be honest with you, it was tough. First, it was adversity. You
were getting beat. Yeah, short and sweet, I did everything my coaches told me not to
do. And I should have known, the guy is eleventh in the country. He also has three titles.
This is my first fight since my car accident when I was legally paralyzed. All these different
things that weren’t supposed to happen happened. I was very fortunate. The outcome doesn’t
matter to me, as long as I was able to compete. It makes all the difference in the world.
I appreciate the opportunity. Yes, I think I deserve fight of the night. If it wasn’t
for that 30 sec of the third round. The round was almost over and you took it. Yes. I work
hard, sir. Tell me about the hold. It’s a guillotine hold. We worked it a lot for
this fight. It’s one of the movement we worked about 2000 times to make sure it was
in my head. Mr Elkins likes, when he gets robbed, he puts his head down. And he goes
for his take down a lot. So as soon as he does, I had already planned for the guillotine.
So yes, that was practiced. The hard part was I didn’t get to do the movement. I took
a beating to get there. The thing about MMA is overcoming aversity. It’s not just boxing.
There’s more to the fight. For the most part, I didn’t take as much damage as it
looked like. I took damage, but not as much as I could have taken. I pretty much controled
a lot of the competition as far as me being on my back. If not, I would be unconsiuos
right now. Thank you again to Zach, I appreciate the opportunity. Yes, I’m a beat, I come
out to fight. I don’t quit. Tell me about the adversity you had to overcome to get here.
I was hit by a limo on Oct 10th. About a year ago. My coxic boone was broken in 28 places.
My pelvis in 48. I had one collapsed lung. Three clean breaks on one side of my rib cage
and fractions throughout. My spine was compressed. My chin broken. What were your chances of,
say, walking again. They said my chances of walking or ever doing anything I wanted to,
was four percent. I actually went through rehab. I taught myself the rehab part, didn’t
go through medical. This is me on my own showing that I’m very determined. I’m going to
be successful at this sport and I will be champion. And that showed in the ring. Yes
it did, I worked very hard.
=== I don’t know how those guys do that. It’s
such an awesome sport. Such dedication. In my job I get to meet a lot of different people
from different walks of life, that’s one of the reasons why I love what I do. There’s
very little routine, I’ve had to learn to roll with the punches - no pun intended. To
be a fighter takes physical strength, stamina, but also confidence, determination and grit.
Guess what, many event organizers I talk to tell me that that’s what you need to put
on an awesome event as well, because you often run into unexpected roadblocks, things just
don’t work out according to plan and you have to adapt and overcome. So maybe the jump
we’re getting ready to do to our next topic really isn’t as far as I thought it was.
Next, we’re going to talk about music. Before I moved to Jacksonville I lived in St. Marys
Camden County, GA for many years. I actually met Nick Petta through a TV pilot we both
worked on many years ago. Nick is an awesome guitarist, and he now owns a recording studio
in St. Marys, but he is also one of the organizers of the Songwriter’s Festival in St. Marys,
Georgia. Hey guys, today I’m with my good friend,
Nick Petta, to talk about the St. Marys Songwriter Festival. So tell me, I want to get all the
details Nick. Wow! Rick Scott, a good friend of mine, former drummer for the group Alabama,
wrote several big hit records. He’s kind of a big deal. Yeah, I found he’s over in
Ft Walton Beach. Rick says, how’s it over in St. Marys, and I say I love it. Come visit.
I got him a job at my studio to track some drums. He says have you ever thought about
doing a Song Writers Festival? I said uh, St. Marys…
[music] Rick Scott is formerly of the award winning band Alabama and is headlining the
event. So tell me a little bit about your background for people who don’t know. You
were a member of the band Alabama, back in the day. Three lifetimes ago. What were the
other life times, I need to know about those too! We have all day. Let’s leave the 90s
out. I’ve been writing songs for 40 years. Started out as a drummer. You’re 40? At
least. I have shirts that are 40. Anyway, I got into the publishing deal, started pitching
songs and that kind of deal. Talk to me about some of the songs. Probably the biggest ones
that people know, I had seven songs recorded by the group Alabama. The biggest one by them
was “Why, lady, why”. It was number one back in 1980. I was in high school. I should
have been. I was 17. I’ve had some Johnny Cash cuts. I was going to ask about that,
his new album just came out. I got one on the new album, out among stars. It’s doing
gangbusters man. Awesome. I got one on the Legend Album by Johnny, that went gold immediately
and did wonderful. I’ve been blessed. I’ve had a lot of cuts in my life. There must be
write. Tail coat ride, is that what you’re doing? I’m just at the right place at the
right time, has nothing to do with writing. I’d love to write a song with you, do you
mind? Let’s do it! I’ll write a song with anybody, I don’t care, Joe. That’s a compliment.
Tell me this, you have some of your own music out as well. I do, I just finished up a project
this past Father’s Day called 22nd Street. You can find it on sceanicgroup.com. sceanicgroup.com.
And Nick Petta and I are co-producing an album, we’re already on to the next thing, letting
this one rock. In that awesome little studio in St. Marys. It’s cool. Nick owns a studio
up there, and he’s a hell of an engineer. He’s alright. Don’t give him too much
credit his head will grow. When you hear the new one… Then I might have to give him props.
It’s great. We’re having fun. A lot of fun, if not, we’re not going to do it. Then
you won’t do it anymore. Come hang out with us, because we like fun. You’re fun… The
here. It will be a great show. And St. Marys waterfront is a great family atmosphere. We
understand there’s even an excursion coming over by boat from Fernandina. Kevin’s boat?
They’ll be able to sit out there on the water, see and listen to it. It’s a free
event. We will have vendors. Also, which is something different for St. Marys. We will
be selling wrist bands. So you can drink beer there? 21 and older, obviously. That’s really
a big deal in St. Marys. Adult beverages. Beer and wine. I may or may not partake. .. [music]
I’m looking forward to visiting my old stomping grounds for the Songwriters festival on September
20th. You can find more information about the event on my website at iknowjax.com
Last week I was wishing the Jaguars the best of luck for the game against the Philadelphia
Eagles, and you know what, in the beginning of the game, the Jaguars were just as awesome
as I thought they would be this season. Then it all changed. I wonder what Richard has
to say about the Jaguars this week. Thanks, Joe! We understand it’s a process and to
have faith in David Caldwell in building this team, one with the second-youngest roster
in the NFL. And for Gus Bradley to coach up the Jaguars. For as much as every fan or media
type as stated “sooner rather than later,” that’s enough. It should be now. Since the
second week of training camp, Blake Bortles has shown he’s a better overall product
than Chad Henne. Sure one can retort with “well, we’re not in team meetings.”
Fine. Or “Henne has a better grasp of the offense.” Does he? For me, the loss to Philadelphia
ranks in the bottom 10 in team history. Consider a number of things: a strong free-agent draft
class, stout defensive line with depth and a No. 3 overall pick used on a QB. However,
we won’t get to see Bortles on the field as the “efficient” Henne will be your
starter through September. I’m not asking for much. Simply someone at the most important
position in sports to advance the hometown team past mid-field, hold onto a 17-point
lead, convert some third downs and avoid burning timeouts. Directly or indirectly, the quarterback
can give your defense time to breathe, hide glaring issues at wide receiver and force
teams into making second-half adjustments. Blake Bortles provides a better option in
all areas. Tune in for my radio show Tuesday nights from 8 to 10 pm on 1010XL and 92.5
FM. It’s Miller On Sports. This Sunday the Jaguars are facing the Redskins, and then
on Sept 21 the Colts here at Everbank Field. I’m still all in and all that --- how about
you? After all, it’s still early in the season and there’s a lot of football left.
Next, we’re going to take a look at what’s happening around town. September is the beginning
of fall events. let’s take a look at what happens next week. It’s again time for the
North Beaches Art Walk. This event takes place on the third Thursday every month right where
the Atlantic Boulevard reaches the ocean in Neptune Beach/Atlantic Beach. Lots of people
on the streets, and lots of bars and restaurants to go and hang out at afterwards. North Beaches
Art Walk takes place on Thursday Sept 18. More information at nbaw.org
Also on Thursday, it’s time for another Jaxons Night Market downtown. at the corner
of Laura and Adams Streets. The market focuses on what makes us uniquely Jaxsons and features
local farmers, local craft artisans, a craft beer garden by Intuition Ale Works and the
best street food vendors in the city. Jaxons Night Market, Thursday Sept 18th starting
at 5.30 pm. For you golf fans out there, the Web.com Tour
is coming to TPC Sawgrass this month. This is a great event where you can see the up
and coming pro golf players. The tournament takes place at TPC Sawgrass Sept 18th - 21st.

Yellow Pig Day originated in the 1960s when two math students from Princeton spent a long
time obsessively analysing the number 17. It seems that they went a little mad eventually,
and decided to invent the concept of a yellow pig with 17 toes, 17 teeth, and so forth…
Now Yellow Pig Day is an important part of the academic calendar, and is celebrated with
cake, carols, parades and general revelry.
