Without a doubt, Batman is the most popular character that DC Comics has ever made and
with multiple critically acclaimed movies, video games, animated shows, AND MORE, it’s
fair to say that lots of Batman fans have never even picked up a comic book.
If you’re wanting to break from the mold and get started with Batman comics however,
here are a few suggestions of where to start.
Batman: Year One is considered to be the definitive telling of Bruce Wayne’s origin story. This
book was written by the legendary Frank Miller, the guy behind Sin City, 300, and oddly enough,
Robocop two and three.
As the name implies, Batman: Year One focuses on Bruce’s first year as Batman, but it
also delves into the origins of Commissioner Gordon back when he was a Lieutenant starting
out in Gotham City after serving in Chicago.
While the New 52 story arc Batman: Zero Year is a very fun and unique take on Batman’s
origin story, if you want the cut and dry, dark and gritty first moments of Bruce’s
vigilante career, then Batman: Year One is where it’s at!
If you’re good on the origin story and know a bit about the Batman mythos, you should
check out Batman: Hush. This is personally my number one recommendation for if you’ve
watched Batman: The Animated Series, played the Arkham games, or watched some of the videos
on my channel.
Seriously, if you haven’t already, then click this button to watch a playlist of every
Batman video that I have ever made.
Shameless self promotion aside, you might know writer Jeph Loeb as the writer of Daredevil:
Yellow, the 1985 “classic” Teen Wolf or maybe as the creator of Red Hulk.
There’s a new villain in town named Hush and he’s been messing with Batman on a psychological
level. Plus, it’s got almost EVERY Batman character playing a part in it. The overall
mystery is a lot of fun and there’s even some red herrings for good measure. This book
is everything that you’d want from a Batman story. Mystery, suspense, action, brooding.
Just go read it! Right now! Seriously! After you watch the other videos of course… You
should really watch the playlist...
And last up, we’ve got Batman: The Court of Owls. This is the beginning of the New
52 run which to this day is still being written by the same man, Scott Snyder. Outside of
this run, Snyder’s notable works are his indie series, American Vampire and Wytches.
This story has Batman taking on a Gotham City legend! Supposedly, there is a secret society
called the Court of Owls that runs the city from the shadows and they have sentenced Bruce
Wayne, not Batman, to death. Watch Batman’s descent into madness as he’s hunted down
by the assassin Talon and unravels the shocking truth behind the inner workings of his city.
It’s really cool!
