Ryan Williams ventured over to moscow to interview Edward stone it's the first
in-depth in person interview love to be out and it's a leader and
the videos actually turned out pretty awesome he defended what he did
his idea of what the the purpose of journalism is
his idea what patriotism really means in the modern day
and three to play a few of the clips of the video I
let's let's start with her comp you have done quote
significant an irreversible damage to the nation
he said there is quote concrete proof the terrorist groups and others are
taking action
and making changes and it's going to make our job
tougher and this amounts to telling our enemy
our playbook so what's interesting is that we see the exact same language
the exact same accusations I being
leveled against whistleblowers being labeled against any critical any
government program
%uh throughout history throughout time daniel ellsberg
got the exact same language leveled against by the nixon administration they
said it wasn't gonna cause great damage
that was your first do no harm that our national security has been harmed that
he was gonna put american lives at risk
but we've had so many years
decades since daniel ellsberg so pentagon papers were revealed and yet
not unlike independence
so they apparently have concrete proof
that he has that reversibly harmed american interests unfortunately the
only way we're gonna see that concrete proof
is another person like Edward snowden yeah I'm government documents I'm so I
think that that was a i mean when we watch this before the
the show you were nodding along with them ennui early on made the comparison
with ellsberg I think he makes a very good point there
people say but people what the critics obtained it I love
snow too will say hey stay in the United States state &
ellsberg didn't run he didn't leave okay a good point
the other thing is they didn't torture back then were torturing people
like we do now city tortured by Bradley Manning Chelsea Manning
so maybe that would be a disincentive for you to stay here to be torture we
also
tortured Jose Padilla by the way so what they tortured a Bradley Manning for a
year
okay so maybe that's why you wanna stay and place Egypt Friday Nov
ellsberg by the way calls Edwards noted a hero and said that he was right to
leave the country
so that ends that criticism that would snowed in
that should and it won't end it people keep bringing this up but it should and
it won't
well i mean that that criticism I think we're together
a little later in the video right but on to job
snowed in there is no point here about how does the same exact language
throughout history this spot on because that he's right
I every single time you do something that the government does not like
the government claims the you're hurting
the nation you are threatening the lives of our beautiful children
and if they died their blood is on your hands because you did something we did
not like as the government
as the same hired nonsense every single time
and I'm and the problem is that there is no transparency here
none whatsoever the transparency on this program didn't tell us what was going on
and again you don't cause what that concrete in irreversible harm but not
done to our country
is they wanted to find it vaguely like I'm nothing if the show like this agent
was killed on this day evening and the way he did
but they can't they didn't even vaguely alluded to with this cell suddenly
became quiet after the revelations that
didn't even make up something it would be simple enough to make something up
but they don't even go to that upper
they never the it but they'll never also
they never couple that with well he's made us less safe but
he didn't stop the government doing all it on constitutional legal *** cell
they eat they never Hayley three is the possibility they would stop
unfortunately at least so far in the debate over possible reforms in congress
they don't seem willing to make any significant changes
%um don't make his last day mister spending six billion dollars
no big contract for Booz Allen Hamilton to continue Dana
data mining and not spending that money more efficiently
elsewhere that make that last safe I having
as drug droned indiscriminately in other parts of the world
and killing people who are not guilty about any crimes yep
other than having the wrong cell phone perhaps actually hundreds and hundreds
about I
civilians that make South last say yeah
and you know blaming all of this on adverse known as if he is the one
with bringing about these problems if if any problem happened emulated his feet
that makes as less safe because we're not were not smartly
and and judiciously and intelligently
addressing real problems no we have we've been talking about sort of some
the history of the things that america's done to generate
opposition to our policy is to generate new terrace he talked specifically about
how the US is used as through the memory and legacy of 9/11
welcome back up I think the brightest terrorism seriously
I and I think we all do and I think it's really disingenuous for
for the government to invoke I
and sort of scandal eyes are memories disorder exploit
the the national trauma that we all suffer together
and worked so hard to come through to justify programs
that have never been shown to keep us safe
but cost us liberties and freedoms
that we don't need to give up and our Constitution says we should not give up
I'll say this he is one articulate man yeah he is
that was excellent Howard Colin Harris anchor
trader card trader bad bad person I mean I have to imagine he spent a lot of his
time in moscow
surf thinking this through the private that for several months in advance of
stealing the documents and leaking them but
yet he's done his his history work is done his research
and I i think that when you look at what he says when you think about what he
says and compare it to the attacks which were gonna show shortly coming from the
people like Peter King
people like john bainer it's hard not to be on his side
now what but one of the most common criticisms I love him is that he went to
russia because he wants to work for what more could you want to help invade
ukraine or something like that
on he talked specifically about the accusations were including with
other puter regime in this clip so I have no relationship with the russian
government all
I'm I've never met the russian President
iron I'm not supported by the russian government by taking money from the
russian government I'm not a spot
and he goes on to say why he ended up there in the first place in this clip
do you see yourself as a patriot I do
you know i i think patriot is a word that's
thats thrown around so much that it can be devalued nowadays
but being a patriot doesn't mean prioritizing service to government
above all else being a patriot
means knowing when to protect
your country knowing when to protect your constitution
knowing when to protect your country
from the violations up in and encroachments up adversaries
and those adversaries don't have to be foreign countries
so again obviously he's been doing a lot of thinking a lot of philosophizing
about serve the purpose of patriotism we're in america we're used to just
your patriotism it's an overweight guy tromping around the woods michigan
with an assault rifle like that would be treated as now it's someone who is
willing to sacrifice is relationships his livelihood
even where he lives and and flee to a place we doesn't know anyone doesn't
belong there
but he was willing to do it because he thought that that's what he needed to do
to keep America safe
that would be treated us yes because America
the United States is really an idea right the ideas Liberty
freedom and that's what he's really committed to
and our constitution that's the idea that america is that he's more
communities and certainly Brock Obama is
or John Carey where the recipe we're gonna see a second
I you're absolutely right I first I don't like the words patriot and
and trader and these jingoistic terms because they're so self-serving
and and I don't believe that our that any person is necessary a patriot war
a trader that they may acted shy to be one day
and beyond paycheck the next day saba much
more complex look at I view that but the idea that America is an idea now to
places
absolutely correct any I mean america is not about
the amber waves of grain to purple mountains I
it's about the idea that as a nation of laws not men
that is I equally under the law we have certain rights
I that are are sacred
and it doesn't matter if if we live where we currently live today
it's not american you more if those rights art are distinguished yet
yet and and preserving those rights I you know
your own self payroll I is
I guess the most patryk the Hindu yet yeah we
we hear a lot of talk at least from certain
acquire the country about people's rights and how much they wanna protect
them
but they never seem to be the most important rights like our actual privacy
rights are rights to have
an election that mean something alright alright for voice to mean something
politically
its always just the cons like that the only thing
the the thing that they say is supposed to protect all the other rights
at the end of the day seems to be the only thing they care about protecting at
all
on but okay so you let's go ahead
we've got a stone talking about why it is that handed over all the documents
has been accusations
that he was retaining some information I heard handed over to
the Russian government or to potentially blackmail the US government web
reality is today I hold no document so I didn't want to
risk bringing them for russia now I could have held onto that
and tried to use it to to threaten the government I could have used it
try to sell it or enrich myself but
that would have gone against everything that I was trying to do
so the question was what do I do it but at that point and
the solution that I came up with was to destroy it
to take it out my hands and entrusted forward to institutions in the press
the best way to make sure that for example the russians
can't break my fingers on and compromise information or or hit me with a bag of
money until I give them something
was not to have it all no I do have to say
I don't know if I fully believe what he says about what's happened in his time
in russia now because I think that he secretly is some sort of
Russian sympathizer who wanted to help them out but once you're there any idea
that he's never spoken with water but I find hard to believe
the idea that that the russian government has been so benevolent that
they haven't tried to put any pressure on they haven't tried to get any
information Adam
I find that very hard to believe and look obviously it's a lot easier to
protect the information if you destroy it
but you still know what you read you know quite a bit as he said in the
interview he is
his work then I say I brought the DIA the CIA
like he knows quite a bit they could still get plenty of information from
them if they wanted to
so I think the idea that he has been completely inflated for any
contact the russian government that seems questionable agreed and that goes
my
prior point that I don't like the view people as patriots or traders
I can be both I so in a disclose all this information to the US
that was patriotic he made that traders things once
you know once you got there I have no idea he may or may not have hopefully
didn't
but it doesn't that's how I wanted in a broader point in his bucket somebody's
got a saint
I a patriot whose done nothing wrong purses this guy's a
you know demonic trader who is evil I mean
people complicated and you know if he's right living in Russia
right now on their their protections that weekend is going grab him
cases are they're going to get something out of him what could that be I don't
know
yeah probably something now and that the new date also might be worth
what we learned from the leaks that he provided but it is weird
in america how we automatically assume that certain actions protect America
if you use military force who cares about the details you're protecting
American interests
when that could not be more unsure not only are you not necessarily protecting
American interests but you might very well be doing far more damage than
simply no action whatsoever
I mean our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have undeniably
created a new generation of terrorists in countries
around the globe not even just the countries we invaded but the the the the
changing views on american power and its application abroad
has certainly created terrorists throughout that region and yet
we put bush on tv dish of the paintings he's made of world leaders
and what's known as hiding in moscow agreed and and further to that point you
know
makes me sick that someone like *** Cheney and his buddies are Halliburton
got so insanely rich
of these wars and some like Donald Rumsfeld that's smart
*** I is you know strutting around
you know at Nancy institutions teaching other people
what you know how brilliant brilliant here's welcome I ever Snowden has to
basically
you know be in exile from a private firm of his life and not enjoy a
you know all that great here in America so that's that's terrible and
you know when I see those are those neo-cons
on television speaking as if they had any authority
on anything remotely related farm policy and again pushing for more wars that
benefit their cronies
II financially very handsomely
I it just makes me sick I mean why do we even have the G one television
you know what would you say look you were one hundred-percent I'm wrong about
everything he said about the Iraq war
with a shot up and go home
