Nikhil Finds His Voice

Nikil Paudel - the bright young boy who loves to help his mother around the house, play cricket and read. But his true passion is singing. Just one year ago Nikil wasn't able to enjoy many of his favorite activities. Since 2005 ORBIS has been working with partners in Nepal to build the pediatric eye care services throughout the country, and in 2007 Lumbini Eye Institute opened their first pediatric unit to serve as a main referral center for children where Nikil was freed. Nikil first began having problems with his vision nearly four years ago. As his vision continued to decline, it eventually became extremely cloudy, making it difficult for Nikil to read, write and succeed in school. Unable to see clearly he did not interact with the other children for fear of being teased. After going for a regular check-up at the Lumbini Eye Institute he was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts and was able to receive treatment to restore his sight. Today he is not only excelling in school but he's no longer the shy quiet child he was before his operation. ORBIS is working with partners throughout Nepal with the goal of creating more access to eye care for children like Nikil.
