Greetings my friends and welcome to the ForeignTrails Blog
Today we let you participate in our attempt to reach Fossil Rock
Really attempt only actually, but more about that later
Fossil Rock that's a small rock formation between the Emirates Dubai and Fujairah
and it's a relative common destination for adventurous weekend trips into the desert
According to research it is supposed to be one of the easier desert routes
and as we tried ourselves with the big bikes in light sand already, Fossil Rock sounded like a good challenge
On our way we were already warned that we might be slightly wrong equipped
But of course we headed on with lots of confidence - at that point we didn't know yet how right he had been
It's not that he doesn't live here for ages so how experienced can he be?!?
How right he actually was (of course) we came to realize once we were facing the first dune
On camera this always looks a lot smaller and easier as it is
but I think you'll get a better impression once we're up
And now that we're here already we shall at least give it a try, shall we?
Thanks to more then 50kg less weight on the 690 I actually kind of made it to the top
But a smooth run looks different, definitely!
Cheered from my partial success, of course, Felix gave it another try
But the 1190 simply was too heavy
and with the 50/50 enduro tires it was just lacking the necessary traction to push 200kg+ up the dune
After we scouted for some alternative routes
we gave it a few more tries - we won't get up that fast
But honestly with minor success only
The beast was just too big, the tires too wrong and maybe we were also lacking some experience in sand
but we will certainly gain that experience soon
And one thing is for sure, we'll definitely come back, we're not done with that dune yet!
Slightly disappointed and with the sunset approaching fast
we gave up for today and headed home
But we couldn't resist to do some gravel and light sand routes for that way
Kind of as a substitute
