Hello, my name is Gauthier, I'm 7 years old. I would like to know who was the man
in the iron mask.
Hello Gauthier. Something tells me you already know a little about your subject since
your drawing represents the Bastille and the man in the iron mask
is indeed one of the most famous prisoners of France jailed at the Bastille.
So why the man in the iron mask ? Because according to the legend, this prisoner,
who died in 1703 in the prison of Bastille, always wore an iron
mask which prevented everybody to know who he was. It actually doesn't really seem
plausible, because if he were constently wearing the mask, he would have died far before 1703,
for it would indeed have caused him some diseases. Indeed ,the man in the iron mask has been imprisoned
for many decades before dying in his cell, kept by a man
in particular : Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, a veteran musketeer at the service of a minister
of Louis XIV and his minister Louvois.
As far as we know , Saint Mars would have kept the prisoner with him during
more than 30 years, moving with him everytime he was asked to change
of jail , taking care that the man in the iron mask never spoke
to anybody.
Why ? Maybe because he knew things, things that should not
be revealed, but that we will never know. Anyway, when the minister Louvois
who had ordered the man in the iron mask's imprisonment, died, his son send a letter
to Saint Mars to confirm the prisonner was still to be kept. He would then certainly
be important at the eye of the government!
To know who the man in the iron mask is remains a very tricky question, and
I prefer to tell you right away, we absolutely don't know the identity
of the man in the iron mask. There even are 50 person who could be the prisoner,
according to the differents investigations.
Among in the persons we suspect to be the man in the iron mask, we can think of Nicolas
Fouquet who was in charge of the finances under Louis XIV and who would have critisized the king
for spending too much money. It could also be Louis XIV's secret twin,
a brother who could have claim the king's throne, which would have been complicated.
It is often said Louis XV was the last king to know for sure who the man in the iron mask was.
But again, it isn't known for sure. What we know is that Louis XVI and Napoleon
tried to find out who he was, but never succeded...
Since then, a lot of people tried to find out who the man was
and there's a lot of unfounded hypotheses. Some think for instance
it could be Molière, even though there is little chances it would be so.
If not for a new incredible proof to appear out of the blue, my dear Gauthier, we can give up hope
concerning the answer. We would probably never know.
I hope you enjoyed this episode. Don't hesitate to share it with your friends.
See you 'round for an other question.
