the united states and russia are calling for the warring sides in syria's civil war to
let humanitarian aid flow and enforce local ceasefires.
meeting in paris monday u.s. secretary of state john kerry russian foreign minister
sergei lavrov and un envoy for syria lakhd ar brahimi talked about the possibility of
trying to encourage all sides to lay down their arms for a while.
kerry suggested a localized ceasefire beginning with aleppo.
the talks which come ahead of a second peace conference for syria in geneva this month
also touched on the possibility of prisoner exchanges as well as opening humanitarian
access to besieged areas. kerry said rebel groups had agreed to washington
's ideas and that lavrov has talked to the syrian government which may be prepared to
fulfill some of the proposed steps.
