Hurry up, hurry up, we are late, come on
Lets go!!
Hello Space Invaders
Today, World DJ tour brings you backstage
at Jean-Michel Jarre's show
The world tour 2010
You will discover the most amazing collection
of synths in the world
Jean Michel Jarre will present his machines
All in perfect working order
And all this despite shows in all 4 ends of the globe
A private visit just for you
Jean-Michel Jarre will tell you the secrets of the laser harp
And talk to you about the legendary Moog,
AKS and Theremine
This is a unique piece which I have enjoyed filming for you
Last night in Stuttgart
To go see Jean-Michel Jarre in France,
You can choose between 8 cities:
The 17th in Bordeaux,
the 18th in Nantes
The 20th in Marseille
the 21st in Nice
The 23rd in Toulouse
the 24th in Lyon
The 25th in Paris
and the 26th in Strasbourg
Lets go backstage now at Jean-Michel Jarre's show
Get ready to go on stage
This is an exclusive
So Mister Joachim?
Good to see you Jean-Michel, how are you?
Good and you, are you well?
I'm well, it is always great to see you.
Tell me, you are well surrounded here.
Not bad yes, it could be worse!
The problem is that you have to make all this work
Its great to see all this
Well yes especially since these are machines
which we do not see often
The Memory Moog, the AKS
These are the first european synths
which date back to the 60's
Which one is the oldest in your setup?
It would be this one, same brand, EMS
And this is the first synth with which I worked
even during the GRM period
I got it in 1967/68
And it works still I use it on stage
But I also look after them well
I am someone who takes care of them
But at the same time, they hold up well on travels
Even though it has had rain in it, it is rusty all over
It has aged well
The problem is that since there is no memory
There is a family of sounds between instruments,
thats why I have several
So really you make one sound per synth
Because you don't have time to reprogram another sound
Between 2 songs to reprogram the entirety of the settings
Exactly!
So this is one is stuck on one sound
This one does everything which is a noise, wind,
This one is more lined to FX which are more tonal
This is the ARP which is dedicated to all the sounds of brass
Thats cool, what is this manual filter?
The ARP with the faders,
you can't manage to arrange the sound very precisely
And so it allows me actually to manipulate
all the sounds like you will see later
In quite an agile way
We called this in Belgium the dikke knoppe
In Flemish, big button is dikke knoppe
This is my first Flemish lesson
And it works well, thats great
And here the version of the digisequencer
Personally, I knew the wood version,
the version with the furniture
You knew the one in wood
Then after there was the version in wood and black plastic
And now it is the tactile version, the matrix version
Where you can program the sequences...
So this is custom built, developped by you
It was developped by someone at the IRCAM
This is the sound of the laser harp
It is dedicated to it
In fact we have 4 Synthex on stage
which are among those which have the best sound in the world
in the polyphonic analogues
and this one is only dedicated to the harp
which we will see now
This is the RMI which is also a unique instrument
There has to be about 4 of these in Europe
It is a great instrument
It is the first synth with an additive synthese
All the synths works on the basis of
the substractive synthese as you know
by taking away from the spectrum certain frequencies
here you can add them back in
a little like the Hammond organ with the harmonics
so that makes sounds which I've used alot in Oxygene
and in many other things
It is a sound with an incredible thump
and above all very clear sounds
sounds of bells
it is very good for that
it has an arpegiater and a great filter
really very very good
his is the Arlette which you know well
Yes yes, all those nights spent with Arlette
Only good memories
In fact the first sequences of Oxygene
I made them with this
That means that we play live,
You press record then play,
And it adds on more or less what you have done
Oh yea, exactly
We'll hear it much louder later
Why did you chose this master keyboard?
It is the master keyboard of the AKS because in fact,
It is the only keyboard which they made at that time,
It is quite a particular thing
Nothing to do with MIDI
It works with one third per octave
And its a great thing very english
So anyway, talk to me a little about France!
Because today we are in Stuttgart
Its great we took the train over here
We took the train, talked about lots of different things
So you're coming to France, starting with Bordeaux
You need to do a little bit of promo
Tell the Space Invaders of France to come over
Well in fact its a tour which is worldwide
And the most important leg for me
Is the French leg
It has been a while since i've played in France
I start with 8 concerts which are really exceptional to me
I hope it will be exceptional for the crowd too
And i'm doing the 17th in Bordeaux, the 18th in Nantes
The 19th is a day off
The 20th in Nice, the 21st in Marseille,
The 23rd in Toulouse, the 24th in Lyon,
A big week,
the 25th in Paris and the 26th in Strasbourg
This is a big challenge which is starting for you
This home indoors
You who prefers being outside
In a time when more people are doing farewell tours
For me this is more of a welcome tour
Jean-Michel doesn't want to do like all the others
There is also another piece of the museum I like alot
Which is the Moog Liberation
Which is the first keytard
This I must admit I am very jealous,
I don't know how you do it because its very heavy
You need to do excercise to do this or you twist your back
We'll hear it later, it has great sound
The only place i've seen one of these was the well known shop
In Japan, you know, I had sent you the address
They had one like this
And I had to hold back from buying it, I told myself:
I'm not going to bring this back in the plane
Its heave but magnificent!
And it also has a very unique sound
So this is your brand of harp
Yes this is a really exciting instrument
So we have to see if we put the sound in front
It will come
Has it evolved since?
It has evolved meaning that now it works really well
It has different programs,
There is the start, stop,
and the next which allows you
to go from one program to another
Like in many pieces there is of course....
You can't have this many notes as on a keyboard
Because otherwise you don't have enough power with the rays
You mean you are limited to a number of notes? 9?
And so I am obliged to program each time,
for each piece of the track
I have a program change which allows me to go get...
This is the first
Then you have the verse one, verse two, bridge
And you are obliged to change at each piece
So now you better put some gloves otherwise
You can light up a cigarette
Ah not bad!
Wow thats amazing!
Sounds great doesn't it!
So you see, first verse...
That's great!
So this works and then there is another magical instrument
Which is the Theremine
Yes the Theremine
Which is a magical thing
I've done alot on the Theremine!
With regards to the sound, I don't know how you do it
Its really hard
Well done, its great!!
Its really poetic
Which year is this from?
1929
This was invented in the 30's
And it is the story of a guy called Leon Theremine
who made a demonstration to Stalin
who was really impressed
that he sent the Theremine and its inventor to the USA
To show at what point the soviet technologies were powerful
But of course when he went to the USA
he didn't want to come back
So he got caught by the KGB,
kidnapped and brought home to Russia
And for 15 years he worked for the scientists
Developping all kinds of future synths
Someone like Moog was inspired by the work of Theremine
Who was working in secret
So there are many interesting synths
So we will do a little sound check now
Ok so i'll leave you, have a good show
Thank you for coming,
And I am waiting for you all
I think you know what you have to do
We will put the dates up
That way you will know where to spend a great evening
And come to see Jean-Michel
I must admit that I am baffled by everything I have seen
And I can't wait to be sitting down and watch the show
Have a good sound check and see you soon
See you Jean-Michel
There it is Space Invaders
The trip is done for today
Always be ready
With your passport and suitcase near the door
The next World DJ Tour by Joachim Garraud
is coming very soon
See you
