COMM: This family of 5 are on a mission to
show appearances aren't everything. Meet Jim and Lisa Needham, their eldest son Matt, and
the younger children, Jessica and Ben, who were both born with albinism.
Even though they look different to other kids,
parents Lisa and Jim from Wolverhampton are driving Ben and Jessica forwards to achieve
their dreams.
Lisa: I've tried to reassure Jess that it
is actually quite good being different because it gets you further on in life because you
would be noticed more. If you want it, it's out there and to get out there and push yourself
further.
COMM: Jessica and Ben's albinism is a result
or a rare recessive gene found in both parents.
Lisa: The odds of having a child with albinism
is apparently 1 in 17,000. Obviously, because we've both got the gene, it's 1 in 4 in every
pregnancy.
COMM: Despite their positive approach, Jessica
and Ben's condition initially came as a shock to Lisa and Jim.
Lisa: We were absolutely devastated about
Jessica having the condition and you really have just got to live your life with them
and let them lead the way and don't try and stop them from doing anything, because they
really will show you.
COMM: Their unique appearance has brought
its own challenges for the children.
Jessica: It was quite awkward at first to
make friends at school because everyone was asking about my eyes wobbling and why I was
so pale, but I just told them why and they would understand.
In the future, I would like to be a singer.
That's been my dream all my life really.
(Jessica singing)
Friend: She's a really good friend. She has
albinism, but that doesn't change like who she is.
COMM: Even thought they live an active life,
Jessica and Ben's condition means they have poor eyesight, and must wear factor 50 sunscreen
in sunny weather.
Naturally, elder brother Matthew is protective
of his siblings.
Matthew: I do like to look after them because
they're my brother and sister and I do love them, and if they did get bullied or anything
I would try and sort it out for them because want them to have the best lives they can.
COMM: Lisa and Jim are hoping their positive
encouragement will allow Ben and Jessica to reach for the stars.
Lisa: I've told them that they're either gonna
be in the Paralympics or on the stage.
Jim: I think we just want them to have full
and happy lives, I mean, whatever they want to do.
COMM: Jessica and Ben are still young, and
only time will tell if they reach their goals.
