This is Marc Menninger with SearchOptimizationConsultant.com and today we're going to talk about penguins.
But not your ordinary penguin like this guy
we're talking about the Google penguin, like this guy.
Google penguin refers to an algorithm update that Google made
that's designed to slap down websites that use spammy backlinks
and other sneaky tricks to get to the top of the search engines.
Now the guys who did these nasty things are a little upset because the Google Penguin algorithm update actually worked
and drove their websites into the ground.
We don't really care what happens to those guys.
But there are quite a few people who are concerned about the Google Penguin update
because they think that there's a possibility that bad guys might come along
and maliciously try to destroy their websites and everything they've built
by creating these nasty, negative backlinks from *** sites and who-knows-where
and drive their websites straight into the ground.
That's what we refer to as Negative SEO.
The thought of negative SEO attacks has some people panicking.
But Matt Cutts, the smart guy at Google who helps design these algorithms
says don't worry, negative SEO isn't going to be a problem for you.
In fact, Matt hints that Google may give you a way to disavow any negative backlinks pointing to your website
and say I don't want these links pointing back to my website anymore.
Let's hear what Matt has to say...
We've definitely heard the people who are worried about that,
but even in Penguin we built in a lot of protections to make sure that
one person can't hurt another person.
What's interesting to me is that some people have indicated a hope that
maybe it's possible that we could disavow links.
Or go into Webmaster Tools and say these links are not mine, I'd like you to ignore them.
This *** site, I have no idea why they are linking to me or something like that.
Even though we put in a lot of protection to make sure you don't need to worry about that
there have been enough people asking us about that we're at least considering if it makes sense
to offer that in a month or two or three.
Matt mentioned Google Webmaster Tools.
If you manage a website and you don't use Webmaster Tools yet
you need to make sure you get this set up.
It's free. Just go to Google, type in Google Webmaster Tools and it will show up as the first result.
Once you have Webmaster tools set up, the first thing you'll want to do is
go into Preferences on the left-hand side and enable message forwarding.
This is going to allow Google to send you an email any time they see suspicious-looking links pointing back to your site.
They will be happy to let you know.
Make sure you have this set up and you will be well-informed if anything negative is happening to your website.
When Matt talked about disavow links
this will probably show up in the links to your site area in Webmaster tools.
In Webmaster tools you'll have a list of all the links Google is aware of that are pointing to your website.
If there's anything suspicious in there, you'll probably see it here
and if they enable disavow links, you'll probably see that here.
So I'm like Matt. I say don't worry about negative SEO.
If you've got a strong website with good SEO already set up
you're going to be well-protected from anybody who decides they're going to send you negative backlinks.
It's really not going to be an issue.
And to get good SEO results for your website, I recommend using a service like SEOMoz.
