Plumber AZ Benjamin Franklin Plumbing OK, here we are, it's President's Day and
you know we're talking about the White House this morning. When you think of the white
house, you would think they have the creme dela creme, the best of everything there.
But for many years the White House was kinda behind the times. It was almost falling apart.
And it certainly wasn't as posh as we all thought it was right Linda?
That's right it took many many years for all of the sudden 'plumbing' to become important
at the white house.
Yea, exactly, Linda Stanfield, the owner of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, the Punctual Plumbing...Plumber.
The plumbing at the White house had a lot to be desired.
It should did, I think that a lot of the people that went and visited were surprised at the
features that they had that wasn't even update, that they had in their own personal homes
here in the United States.
That's crazy, and you know here we've got a picture behind us of President Taft's bath
tub. Now, a president at that time, he weighed 330 lbs. And you see, look it, there's 4 guys
in this tub here. {laughter} and I believe that the very first
president to get indoor plumbing was Andrew Jackson. And it wasn't until May of 1833.
It's amazing that it waited that long wasn't it?

Yea, and here, again going back to the White House, You would think oh, they're going to
have the best of the bets, we're going to be first before anybody else, and yet, mansions
and hotels had indoor running water before the white house did.
Yea, it was amazing, and again it goes back to importance. It's just like consumers today.
Some of us go and visit our family and say, wow, you don't have a decent showerhead. So
its 'when does plumbing become important?' Just like some president's now days, before
they enter into the white house, plumbing is on the top of their list, what does their
showerhead feel like? What is the experience in the bath tub? Things like that. So it is
important to some people.
I find it ironic that they even get to choose something like that on a checklist of things,
you know something that we so take for granted. And yet, they're like, oh no, I want a strong
showerhead. Tell the story of President Johnson with his.
So he really was interested in pressure behind his showerhead. And it was very very important.
He had a lot, so much pressure that when President Nixon came in hes says that it about pushed
him across the room.
That's crazy. And I know too, through the Truman administration was when he was like,
ok, you know what, this place is falling apart. We need to do some major renovations. They
had wood piping, 35 bathrooms.
Right, through wood piping. Today we have old orangeburg piping that is not handling
water and sewage very well at all. So back in that day it was time to renovate, and the
country had to come together and say this is important to make this happen.
Could you image all those beautiful, black-tie-dinner affairs. You know and the dinner and the dancing,
and then there's like the line for the Out House!. And you don't even think about something
like that either. It was true.
Just Amazing, yea.
And people were walking 5 blocks to get the water and bring it back to the whitehouse.
And they did it all behind the scenes. I don't think that many American's even understood
that that was going on.
No, well and today, again, it's like it was not that long ago, and how far plumbing has
come, and what are some of the current changes that we're seeing?
You know, right now, we are getting a lot of people loving tankless water heaters. And
those have been around. Just as you say, why was the White House, why did it take so long
to make some of those improvements. I really look at that with tankless. Why is it taking
us so long to get into a tankless phase here. It really is a wonderful service it is a wonderful
piece of equipment. And when home owners find it, and they use it, they love it, they never
go back to a tank water heater. So you can kinda look at it the same way.
What do they say about it?
You know, there's no more worry. There's no more worry it's going to flood all the stuff
around it. You don't have to keep heating up water while you and I are sitting here.
The hot water isn't heating up in case we want to turn it on. It only heats up when
you turn it on. So these are things that other countries have had and that's all that they
use. Where, here in the US we still are putting in brand new tank water heaters.
That's crazy.
Well, it's amazing. And there are a lot of people that want it, and I see the need for
it on one side. But I also see so many people liking and using tankless for so many benefits.
And how can we turn our bathrooms and have them be today's version of presidential?
You know, I really think starting with a shower head. Starting with a good flushing toilet.
Those types of things, again we talk about presidential. Can you imagine someone using
a toilet at the white house that didn't flush well. And you're standing there, and you have
to leave, and you have to say, I'm sorry the toilet didn't flush. So those basic things
that we think that happens right at the white house, let's do it in our own house. Let's
stop the running, let's stop the wasting water in the toilets, let's make sure our shower
head performs correctly for our guests, things like that.
Terrific information, terrific Trivia too for President's day. Thank you so much Linda.
Happy President's Day.
Yes, same to you. and Same to You. We'll be right back after this.
