Are you ready for a hard freeze in southern Nevada and surrounding areas? Here are the
highlights of this coming cold snap. I’m meteorologist John Adair from The National
Weather Service in Las Vegas, NV. An Arctic air mass dropping out of western
Canada will invade the western states and bring a cold snap to the Mojave Desert region
from Wednesday into the weekend. Ahead of the cold front, gusty southwest winds will
develop across the region through Tuesday evening. Also, heavy snow and blowing snow
will impact Lincoln county where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Tuesday afternoon
until 4 AM Wednesday. Brisk north winds will follow the front and usher in much colder
air Tuesday night. A hard freeze is expected across the Mojave
Desert region which is highlighted by the blue shaded area on the map. Low temperatures
well below freezing will occur in the lower elevations of the Mojave Desert Wednesday
night through at least Friday night. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing for 8
to 14 hours each night at most sites away from the Colorado River Valley.
Each night will be slightly colder than the previous night. Freezing temperatures will
have a greater impact on pets, plants and pipes the further and longer they dip below
32 degrees. Pets and sensitive plants will be impacted as temps reach the lower 30s.
Exposed irrigation pipe and pool equipment may be damaged as temps dip into the 20s.
Non-insulated buildings could experience plumbing damage with lows in the teens.
Take appropriate actions now to protect pets, plants, pipes and pool equipment.
People in southern Nevada and the surrounding Mojave Desert region should be ready for a
cold snap that will bring a hard freeze each night Wednesday night through Friday night.
Take action to protect pets, plants, pipes and pool equipment. Stay tuned for the latest
weather information from the National Weather Service.
