Te Arawa hapu, Ngati Te Takinga and Ngati Hinerangi of Rotorua
are still unhappy
because although the water of Lake Rotoiti has improved,
the water quality of the Ohau Channel has worsened.
Ohau runs alongside it to the Kaituna River in Okere.
As the water clarity of Lake Rotoiti has improved
since the Ohau Diversion Wall was installed,
however the local hapu of the area are still unhappy.
Lake Rotoiti has improved and so has Lake Rotorua.
However, our concern is the condition of the Ohau River Channel.
It feeds the Kaituna River.
In 2008, the Ohau Channel Diversion Wall was erected
and it's purpose was to divert nutrients from Lake Rotorua
from flowing in to Lake Rotoiti. However...
The algal blooms are still growing
so are the phosphorous levels in our river here
which flows into the Kaituna River
The main concern of locals is the pollution in the rivers.
These concerns are before the local authorities
and hopefully they will realise the importance
of keeping the Ohau River clean
to match the quality of that of Lake Rotoiti.
We have approached Environment BOP and various other committees
to inform them of the pollution in our two rivers.
These issues will continue until improvement are made.
