Hello my name is Andrew. I’m a Teacher with the online English School.
I’m from the north of England in the far North West, not far away from Scotland.
I am going to talk about dreams. The definition of dreams, well there are a few of them.
Dreams can be something involuntary, images, emotions all going on while you’re sleeping
(zzzzzz). So when you’re sleeping, you have a lot
of emotions, a lot of thoughts and a lot of different things going on. You’re not controlling
them, you’re dreaming. The next condition of dreaming could be a
fancy hope, something that you’re thinking of for the future maybe, like becoming a professional
footballer. I won’t ever become a professional footballer but I would hope to be a professional
footballer. I dream of being a professional footballer. Lots of young children dream when
they are very young about being a professional footballer or maybe a professional dancer.
Who knows? We could use the word dream for maybe, aspirations
For example Owning your own business. I aspire to owning
my own business. This would definitely be a dream for the future.
I would hope, I would aspire to have this dream for myself, it would be very nice.
Finally a dream can be an exceptionally gratifying or excellent idea, something beautiful.
For example Our new Lada runs like a dream, hmmm does
it really? So you could also say, if you have something
that works very well, it runs like a dream. Like your new Lada maybe.
I don’t know We also have idioms for dreams. We have many
different types of idioms for dreams.
We have something like, for instance. If you get a very nice girlfriend and she
comes along into your life, she cooks, she cleans, she does everything you want her to
do, she is like a dream come true and she speaks three languages. How amazing.
We could also have something like the dream ticket, is another idiom. The dream ticket
could be for example a new job. You have a job and you expected it to be very difficult
but it was very, very easy and you say to your friends, oh, I’ve got the dream ticket.
On the other hand the dream ticket could be used in a different way. If you win the National
lottery and you become a millionaire, overnight, you’ve got the dream ticket, definitely
got the dream ticket. That’s what we are after.
The next one could be a pipe dream. If someone is talking constantly about doing something,
that they have no chance of doing. For instance, building a house but they have
no money. This would be a pipe dream, you could say living the dream of a pipe. I have
no idea why we use this idiom. I find it quite funny actually and do use
it myself quite often. The next one could be a wet dream. Wet dreams
could apply to Teenagers for certain reasons. Teenage boys, maybe it goes on into your early
adulthood. I am not at large to discuss this any further.
I think you should look this up for yourself. I hope this has been helpful to you.
Maybe you've learned something, maybe you haven’t.
I am going to say goodbye now. So feel English and feel free.
Good bye.
