My name is Heather Wright, and I'm a park ranger for the US Army Corps of Engineers.
I work at Stanislaus River Parks, and it's one of the projects
that has a river flowing through each of the parks.
We have a lot of visitors here at Stanislaus River Parks,
and we have some great reasons to come out.
One of them is the Civil War Day where they reenact Civil War battles--
the North, the South, all the drama, the cannons.

[Wright chuckles] Everything is pretty much cool about this job.
I mean, what's not nice about being outside all day long
and getting to do some of the natural resource things that this job offers?
But my favorite thing [truck tailgate slams] is kayaking.
I love kayak patrol.
To be a park ranger it takes a genuine love for people and natural resources.
Hello. >>Hello.
How are you folks today? >>Pretty good. How about you? >>Good.
[Wright] You also need to like recreation and interpretation,
the ability to express and offer interpretation for the things that you have on the project,
and the recreation aspect of it.
It's really our job to have the parks open and ready and available
for people to come out and recreate.
Many people don't know that there are rangers for the US Army Corps of Engineers,
but we're here for a good reason.
One of them is to be good stewards of our natural resources on our project land.
The other is for public safety and to help people enjoy their recreational experience.
Something as simple as helping a child with their life jacket
is such a rewarding part of my job.
I'm proud to work for the US Army Corps of Engineers.
