(MALE ANNOUNCER): THIS IS
THE BAY AREA NEWS STATION,
KRON 4 NEWS STARTS NOW.
>> CATHERINE: OAKLAND HAS
BEEN UNDER SIEGE.
NOT BY YOUR EVERY DAY
CRIMINALS, BUT BY VANDALS.
ALL OF THEM -- PROTESTING
THE NOT GUILTY VERDICT FOR
GEORGE ZIMMERMAN.
>> CATHERINE: HERE'S THE
LATEST.
FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT DAY,
OAKLAND SUFFERED DAMAGE AT
THE HANDS OF VANDALS DURING
RALLIES FOR TRAYVON MARTIN.
THE RESTAURANT FLORA HAS
BEEN HIT TWICE.
AND JUST YESTERDAY, A
WAITER THERE WAS HIT BY A
PERSON WITH A HAMMER WHILE
PROTESTERS TRIED TO ENTER.
THE WAITER SPENT THE NIGHT
IN THE E-R, AND IS SAID TO
BE O-K.
NINE PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED
IN YESTERDAY'S DISTURBANCE.
BUT SOME ARE ASKING WHY
OAKLAND POLICE DIDN'T REACT
SOONER, BEFORE THINGS GOT
OUT OF HAND.
KRON-4'S SCOTT RATES ASKED
SEAN WHENT, THE CHIEF OF
POLICE OF OAKLAND.
AND SCOTT -- WHAT WAS HIS
ANSWER?
>> REPORTER: OAKLAND POLICE
CHIEF TALKING A LITTLE BIT
OVER FIVE MINUTES WITHOUT
BEFORE BEING WHISKED AWAY.
HERE IS A FEW THINGS HE SAID
WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE VIOLENT
PROTESTS IN OAKLAND.
>> WE HAVE ROUGHLY THE SAME
AND THAT WE HAD ON SUNDAY
NIGHT BUT WE HAD A
DIFFERENT CRIME ELEMENT
THAT OVERRIDE. CROWD ELEMENT
THAT ARRIVED. GOING UP ON
THE FREEWAY AND COMMITTING
ACTS OF VANDALISM THAT
OCCURRED. AVOID TRIED TO
IDENTIFY MORE PEOPLE. I
THINK THAT IS IMPORTANT TO
KNOW, THE NUMBER OF ALL REST
THAT APPEARS TO BELOW BUT IT
IS A SMALL FRACTION OF THE
GROUP AS COMMITTING THE
VANDALISM.
>> I TALKED TO A LOT OF THE
OFFICERS LAST NIGHT, AND IT
IS IN THE BACK OF THEIR MIND
A COULD BE A POSSIBILITY.
BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IS
THE CASE. WE HAVE DONE A LOT
OF TRAINING IN HOW TO MAKE
AN ARREST IN THE SCENARIOS
SPIRIT IS LABOR INTENSIVE.
THAT'S WHAT DRIVES IT.
