I'm your host; Tom and welcome to the PCKicks Computer Help Force the place where we
Talk computer help about all the time. Last episode I showed the process of installing a
Power supply in a computer, today
I am going to complete the ensemble
And show you the process of building a desktop computer from scratch
Taking into account of all the skills we've learned from episodes 2-6
Did you know you already have the knowledge for building your own rig? It's true!
Building a computer from scratch is a practice that's been done throughout the ages
Right from the simple hobbyist days of the seventies
The life of a new computer starts by choosing a case which you'll build the machine with
The components you will need to build a basic working computer are as follows
A power supply if your case doesn't have one already
A motherboard
Some memory
A CPU
A videocard if your motherboard doesn't have onboard video
A harddrive
And, an optical drive
Let's get ready to build the computer
Get out your anti-static wrist strap
Or failing that touch the case with two hands to get rid of any static electricity
Start by opening the case
If your case doesn't come with a power supply go out, buy one and install it
Second step is to take out the current I/O bracket and install the one that
Comes with your motherboard
Be careful though as the edges of the I/O bracket can be very sharp
Next if your case requires it
Take out the spacers and put them into these holes
If the required mounting holes are already present take out the motherboard
From the packaging and position it into the case and align it to these holes
To determine if your case doesn't need additional spacers, remember that the
motherboard shouldn't directly touching the case doing that will of course short out
The motherboard and damage it
After installing the motherboard into the case install the CPU
Memory
Hard Drive, and Optical drive
If you have any; the video card make sure to connect all the needed power cables
If you need more guidance of course feel free to check out the PCKicks channel for the
Previous episodes where I talked about installing these components
Install the LEDs and buttons of the case by looking at the printout of the motherboard
These pins are usually located around here on the motherboard
If you don't know where to look, refer to your motherboard's manual
Before closing up the case
Double check to see that your newly built computer can and will boot
Once if you hear the fans coming on and a screen familiar to this one
Then it means; it's alive!
So that's how you build your own computer
Building your own computer will not only give you a sense of accomplishment
But also gives you an inside look at a computer right from birth
Did I also mention the greater control of what goes inside your computer
You can also save cash or build that computing rig of your dreams
