I'm Rick Rush, and the image you're seeing is a preliminary sketch of my upcoming painting
entitled "Crimson Dominance". It's of the 2012 National Championship game between Alabama
and LSU.
The purpose of this preliminary sketch is to plan out all the elements of the painting
in advance, so that everything flows and fits in the image the way it should.
The one thing that I wanted to attempt to capture in this image is the overwhelming
dominance of the Alabama Crimson Tide, on offense and on defense.
The foreground features the Offensive MVP AJ McCarron who has handed the ball off to
Trent Richardson. This was of the play when Trent ran the touchdown to really seal the
game and give Alabama the victory. This play resulted in a 34 yard touchdown. This was
the first and only touchdown either team scored against the other in eight quarters of play.
The blockers that you see in the play are Smelley, Fluker, McCullough, and Jones.
The middleground features LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson being tackled by a host of
Alabama defenders. Hightower, DePriest, Gentry, and the defensive MVP Courtney Upshaw are
all involved in tackles that they made on Jefferson actually during the game.
One of the things that will take place in the image is that Jordan Jefferson who is
in the center with the defensive tackles being made on him will be left of the center line
in the image, which is symbollic of the dominance of the Alabama defense in keeping LSU from
crossing midfield succesfully during most of the ballgame.
A second vignette in the middleground features CJ Mosley intercepting a errant Jordan Jefferson
quarterback toss.
The only time LSU made it across midfield against Alabama, the Tide forced a turnover
that resulted in the touchdown that the image is centered around when Trent Richardson scored.
The Tide completely dominated the game - this was the first shutout in a National Championship
game since the 1992 Orange Bowl, and the first ever shut out in a BCS bowl game. So the painting's
title comes from that, Crimson Dominance.
The background will feature all of the celebration and the ultimate conclusion of the BCS Championship
game. Coach Nick Saban holding the BCS trophy, and portraits of several of the season's most
valuable players, including: Upshaw, Hightower, McCarron, Chapman, Smelley, and possibly a
few others.
