More details are emerging about the suicide of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro while
he was behind bars.
According to Ohio officials, corrections officers didn't complete their rounds and forged prison
reports around the time Castro was found dead in his cell last month. (Via Business Insider)
The two officers involved reportedly lied about doing eight required checks on Castro
in the hours before he died. Video surveillance footage shows only two checks were done during
that time. (Via WCAU)
The accused officers have since been suspended.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, officials also released new information that raises
the question if Castro was really trying to kill himself.
When Castro was found in his cell, his pants and underwear were pulled down around his
ankles, suggesting he could have died as a result of autoerotic asphyxiation, not a suicide
attempt.
Plus, Castro didn't leave a suicide note or give any other indications that he was going
to take his own life. (Via WRC-TV)
The report also said an ambulance that was supposed to provide medical assistance at
the jail was significantly slow in its response time when Castro died.
