There's all kinds of space-saving techniques for small-space gardens and one of them that's a
time honored one is the use of some type of a structure
to train plants in a vertical position so they take up less ground space,
but give you a
really good, productive harvest.
This structure right here is nothing more than bamboo stakes
that are lashed together to
support a structure of, in this case, pole beans.
Pole beans are highly productive, but if they're allowed to run on the ground
that's all you have in the garden.
Structures are individual things. Everyone has their own ideas about what a structure should look like
and what it should do,
but it's main function is to hold something up and
what you do that with is up to you. In this case it's bamboo stakes.
It could be poles or other types of things or even some type of trellis.
In the front of this are a modification of what's called a cage and in this case
these are around pepper plants. You oftentimes see them around tomatoes
and these are excellent for use in training tomatoes in a vertical, upright position to keep them
from sprawling on the ground, keep the fruit clean,
easier to pick
and just make really wonderful things to train plants to smaller spaces so you have
productive yields. So keep in mind structures and these structures are actually
not that bad looking. They can be highly decorative elements in the garden.
This could almost be
the back of a flower border if you want to put flowers in front of it
and use this as a background for flowers
and so you combine both flower and vegetable garden.
