To conclude our discussions surround the Takutai Moana Bill Hikoi
Hone Harawira joins us now.
What are your aspirations for this hikoi?
This isn't just about me.
Another group is leading this group, but its purpose is the same.
If a group, like Labour or National, attempts to steal our foreshore
we should march to show the world that we are opposed.
2004 hikoi was unsuccessful, the bill passed anyway.
Why do you think this will be any difference?
Wikatana said to me this morning,
'Uncle, in 2004 Labour stole the foreshore and you all marched.'
'Yes' I said.
'Then that's what we are going to do this year too then,
'or should we just sit at home and remain silent.'
I said, 'That's up to you.' Hikoi was the answer.
I want to acknowledge them who will let the world know
that Maori do not support the bill.
The shocking thing is that the tribes have said
they don't support the bill.
Over 95% of submissions made to the Maori select committee
were opposed to the bill.
But the Maori Party still supported it.
You're looking at starting up a new party, how's that going?
Maori communities have been in touch
asking me to come and meet with them to discuss
the major issues for our people are; unemployment; welfare and so on.
But apart from that to create a new party to carry these issues.
The Maori Party is in there, but our people are still at the bottom.
What should we do? We need a new vision and a new party.
That's been the call from the East Coast to Tainui, to the West Coast,
to the south and everywhere.
Next week I will be visiting them all.
They're not only coming from Northland aren't they?
Although there are Ngapuhi throughout the country
we are receiving calls from many other tribes.
Metiria Turei is interested in meeting. Will you meet with her?
I must thank her for her support.
Tomorrow I will return to Parliament to meet with her.
Hone Harawira, thank you for your time today.
