In the nation's capital there are nonprofit
organizations whose goals are to improve the lives
the world's citizens. The Organization of American States represent
most of the countries of the American continents.
Inland Valley New's Emmanuel Ramos brings us the story on one of
Washington DC's most important international organizations.
The Organization of American States
also known as the OAS is the oldest regional organization in the American hemisphere.
It is made up of 35 different countries from the Americas including the United States,
Mexico, Canada and almost every country in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The OAS was established in 1948 and is composed of many
secretariats that focus on different areas,
ranging from political, economic, social, and even cultural aspects.
One of these divisions is a Trust for the Americas
It was established in 1997 to promote public and private sector participation
in social and economic development projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
At the Trust for the Americas we work in three different areas. The first one is economic opportunities
the second one is citizen security, and we also work for human rights.
The main program that we have at the Trust for the Americas is called POETA
or the Partnership for Employment through technology in the Americas.
POETA is currently present in 14 countries in the hemisphere
in 146 community technology centers
and we have trained more than a 100,000 people
and more than 700,000 people have been benefited in the history of the program
Another department within the OAS is a Multi-Dimensional Security Secretariat
which hosts Inter-American Committee Against Terrorism, also known as CICTE.
The main purpose of CICTE is to develop cooperation amongst all the member states
to combat and eliminate terrorism
CICTE secretariat collaborates with national governments and national
officials and specific agencies throughout the region to prevent any illegal activity,
to prevent any act of terrorism.
CICTE Secretariat designs specific programs
and activities targeted to the specific needs of every single country.
The work of CICTE Secretariat, it is important because
it ensures the safety of the general public.
With headquarters in Washington DC, the Organization of American States continues to this day
attempting to better the lives of all citizens from the American continents.
